DAVID SALLE - "Sensitized Spaces" (excerpt from ART/new york No. 65)

David Salle came to New York in the late 70' after studies at CalArts under the tutelage of John Baldessari. He quickly became part of a new wave of artists that included Julian Schnabel, Francesco Clemente, Sando Chia, Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, among others, that rejected Conceptual-ism, and above all, Minimalism. Loosely known as the Pictures Generation, they turned to using figurative imagery in painting and photography that liberally borrowed from commercial art and the media. Part of a long series on contemporary art, (ART/ new york No. 65), this fascinating film looks at several exhibition over the years, at both the Gagosian and Mary Boone Galleries. It also includes a lengthy interview conducted with Salle in his Brooklyn studio.

David Salle at MARY BOONE GALLERY

David Salle has been an ubiquitous presence within the Downtown art scene for over thirty years now. Existing somewhere between avant avatar and fashion plate, Salle has continued to produce some of the most commercially successful paintings visible in the city that meld an elegant sense of style while manipulating the narrative content of Pop and porn imagery.

David Salle: Coming and Going

David Salle - Coming and Going, 1987 acrylic and oil on photosensitized canvas Washington National Gallery Davide Salle's paintings comprise what appeared to be randomly juxtaposed images, or images painted on top of each other with deliberately ham-fisted paint handling. His subject matter tended toward the popular, the gratuitous, and the pornographic, and was combined in ways that appeared deliberately incomprehensible. His work was called cynical, calculating, and cold (Wikipedia). Is David Salle a figurative? Well, it depends what figurative means. I would say that any part of his painting is figurative while the whole is not. His art is at once post-pop-art and post-photo-realism. He starts with elements of the real universe (captured through the eye of the camera - and these elements belong to the popular culture, that's true), processes them (to get the essential details that were forgotten in the synthesis operated by the human eye), then mixes them in impossible amalgams (to give each element a new role and a new meaning). The outcome is his own universe. (Musical background: Dr. J. Song, performed by Brian Ales)

David Salle

David Salle1952 Born in Norman, Oklahoma, 1973 Education: California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California, BFA 1975 California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California, MFA David Salle has taken the device of pastiche, which is central to modern art, and made it both the form and content of his work. Portraits, interiors, still-life and abstraction are all conversing in similar time, together in a hyper-textual visual story. The connections do not seem forced, so much as nearly random.David Salle reflects the ongoing modern preoccupation with the problem of reconciling one's individuality with the constant input of images and ideas from the outside, media-dominated world.David Salle's images come from a variety of sources including magazines, stock photographs, and pornography. Salle puts these images together in a painting the way another artist might create a collage using scraps of paper. Más información: www.davidsallestudio.ne Music: "This Is War". Artist: Lone Wolf.
