When you think of health food, what comes to mind? Avocados always seem to be at the top of the list—they're rich in vitamins, they reduce cholesterol, prevent cancer... but that's not all. Supposedly, they have another physical benefit—to stimulate the sex drive! Do you think that's true? Hot for Words must investigate. Avocados are native to Central America, an area originally inhabited by the Aztecs. The Aztecs called the fruit "ahucatl," after their word for testicle. There are two possible reasons for this: first, the two look somewhat alike. If you've ever seen avocados growing on trees, you know that the fruits dangle low, often in pairs! And second, the Aztes believed it was an aphrodisiac. When the Spaniards came to the Americas, they thought ahucatl sounded like avocado (which meant "advocate," or "lawyer," in Spanish), And so, around 1736, the fruit came to Spain, and then spread throughout the rest of Europe with the new name—and the same old reputation, which persists even today. In 2001, the California Avocado Commission took a poll, and found that 63% believed in the avocado's aphrodisiac reputation. Modern science tells us that this isn't just folklore—avocados deliver a ton of nutrients essential to sexual health: beta carotene, magnesium and vitamin E. So, if all ... |
