Heat Pump Noise Level Defrost Cycle

Heat Pump typical operation PLUS GOING THROUGH DEFROST CYCLE. (Purpose of Video is to hear noise level of heat pump during normal operation as well as at its loudest point. Loudest noise level occurs during a defrost cycle when a sudden "hissing" sound is emitted. The colder the outside air temperature the more frequent the heat pump goes through a defrost cycle. (Below around 5 degrees celcius a heat pump could go through a defrost cycle as frequently as once per hour) Please note that this video was taken during the day with background traffic noise.

2001 Trane XE1000 Weathertron heat pump: 2 defrost cycles in 1 night!

It was really cold out, so I did not spend excessive amounts of time watching the heat pump. The house has floodlights, and every so often I would turn those on and go out and watch the heat pump. I was able to get two defrost cycles. There was no steam show in this video, but I did capture the weird phenomenon that occurs when this unit goes into defrost. While running in heat mode, it will just shut completely off, then a minute or two later it will kick back on in defrost mode

2009 Amana 3-ton 14 SEER heat pump: Really long defrost cycle!

My aunt turned the thermostat up and the unit restarted in defrost mode. This was a LONG defrost cycle, and even though I could feel the steam and warmth coming from inside the heat pump, I couldn't see anything.

2 zone Janitrol heat pumps (and a DEFROST cycle!!)

These are the heat pumps at the youth house that the youth group is meeting at. The downstairs unit (smaller unit) is a 2.5 ton from 2000 and the upstairs unit is a 2 ton from 1994. Both are heat pumps matched with electric air handlers with Auxiliary back up heat strips. They heat and cool VERY WELL.
