Mediactive: A User's Guide to Democratized Media

Please join the New America Foundation in a conversation with Dan Gillmor, Director of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University's Cronkite School of Journalism and author of the new book Mediactive. In his book, Gillmor wants to upgrade news and information by upgrading us -- the audience -- to be more active media users, as consumers and creators. Many media sources -- ranging from the trustworthy to the deceitful and potentially dangerous -- aren't the only things that could use a check-up. Gillmor's book shows media consumers how to "upgrade" themselves so that they are able to recognize, demand, and create better information. A wine reception will follow the discussion. This event is co-sponsored by the New America Foundation and Arizona State University. www.newamerica.net

Ways and Means Committee Hearing Democratized by The People, 11/28/2011

Social Equality Educators member Jesse Hagopian issued a Citizen's Arrest Warrant for Washington State House Ways and Means Committee members, and spirited `Mic check!' testimony ensued inside the chamber, in the halls, and outside the building, before the hearing was cancelled, ostensibly due to a fire marshall's report that the building was overcrowded. Jesse was arrested at this point. I don't have that bit recorded, but atmosphere was charged, interesting, full of energy.

Boxee: Entertainment in the Age of Democratized Content

Chances are if you watch building43, you aren't just plopping on the sofa and watching countless hours of mind-numbing TV by yourself. Modern entertainment allows us to share videos on YouTube, hunt for great tunes on Pandora, and catch the latest episode of "Lost" on Hulu. Fortunately for us, there's Boxee. Boxee is a centralized control panel for the media you consume online. Users can easily switch between GeekBrief.TV, the latest episode of Jon Stewart, and the Flickr pics they took on their latest Europe trip. It delivers a similar experience you'd get with something like DirectTV but includes ALL of the mediums used for modern entertainment. The best part? Boxee isn't just a console--it's a social network. Follow and be followed by your friends to find the coolest content available on the world wide web. Unlike NBC or other networks, Boxee is open and available to broadcast any type of content. To get your network on Boxee, use their SDK to integrate on your own. It's open and very simple. Andrew Kippen (@academik) of Boxee explains how the company came to be, its capabilities, and what's next in the future of entertainment. For more info, check out their CrunchBase profile.

Ashok Kumar on democratizing student government and structural reforms - For Student Power

www.forstudentpower.org Filmed in Montréal, QC, in October 2007. -- What happened in our university, we had this thing called the Alliance for Democracy, which a lot of people were a part of and it was just like -- there were like over a hundred students that would come to these meetings, and it was from every women's group, and multicultural group, and any left of center group other than the Democrats. And they ran a bunch of candidates and literally took over every part of the student government. And then they instituted a series of reforms -- I'll give you the example of Venezuela, right? You have a government that comes into power and institutes a series of social reforms, but then structural reforms. Social reforms like universal healthcare, all these services, and then structural reforms so it builds capacity -- you know, like community councils that build capacity, so that radicals actually retain power. When Alliance for Democracy took over it was about a 2-3 year period, and in that time they instituted all these -- bus pass, basic health care, they gave money to the tenant resource center, they created a legal assistance -- all this stuff. And none of those things got taken away, because when students realize these are basic services even conservatives can't take them away -- even if they want to, they're not going to be able to. If this country, for example, got universal health care, they couldn't take it away -- like they can't take away social security, even ...

How the Internet Democratized Animation: Wael Attili of Jordanian Studio Kharabeesh

Wael Attili of Jordanian animation house Kharabeesh discusses the history of animation and how the internet has freed it from the control of traditional media, enhancing artists' abilities to use it as a medium for community expression. Attili also discusses how he built Kharabeesh, which means "scribble" in Arabic, to render low-cost cartoons that people could relate to, that could critique society with a dose of humor. He ends with a video on Kharabeesh's story, created by Wamda's production partner, twofour54's Creative Labs.
