Evolution Desert Biome

The desert biome is characterized by low precipitation, a high rate of evaporation (seven to fifty times as much as precipitation), and a wide daily range in temperature. The dramatic temperature fluctuations are the result of low humidity, which allows up to 90 percent of solar radiation to penetrate the atmosphere and heat the ground during the day, then for this accumulated heat to be released back into the atmosphere at night. Precipitation in deserts, unlike other biomes, is highly irregular. In the Sonoran Desert, rain usually comes in short, sporadic clusters of rainy days three to fifteen times a year. On average, only one to six of these rainfalls is large enough to stimulate plant growth. Thus, Sonoran plants experience long periods of inactivity broken by periods of rapid growth and reproduction.

Desert Animals - The Living Desert

California travel expert Veronica Hill of www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com offers a guide to desert animals at the Living Desert in this episode of "California Travel Tips." The Living Desert zoo in Palm Desert is home to some of the most common desert animals found in North America. Plan on at least a full day to enjoy this gorgeous 1200 acre park. You'll spot a large number of animals founds here in our California desert, from the adorable bobcat and crafty coyote, to the majestic mountain lion. Be sure to arrive early in the morning if you want to see the animals in action. By mid-day, many have retired to their burrows for a nap and reprieve from the intense desert heat. A highlight for me was a glimpse at two endangered species — the desert bighorn sheep, found in the rocky mountains of California, and the gorgeous Mexican wolf, once found throughout the Southwest. This is also one of the few places where you'll find the rare and tiny desert pupfish, which can survive in waters over 100 degrees. If you're into birdwatching, this is a great place to see some beautiful desert birds up close, from the roadrunner and hummingbird to the golden eagle and Great Horned Owl. Look up in the sky and you may spot a Harris Hawk coming down for a landing. I hope you've enjoyed this quick look at the animals of the Living Desert. Just don't forget to dress for the hot Palm Springs weather, bringing along plenty of water, sunscreen, and — of course!— a camera. The Living Desert 47-900 ...

Desert Plants - Desert Landscaping

California travel expert Veronica Hill of www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com offers a guide to desert plants in this episode of "California Travel Tips" filmed at the Living Desert in Palm Springs. With little rainfall and average summer temperatures rising to over 110 degrees, desert plants must be extremely hardy to survive. Veronica Hill of California Travel Tips tours the Living Desert botanical gardens in Palm Desert. Let's take a look at some common desert plants and learn a few tips about drought tolerant desert landscaping. Palm Springs is known for its tidy landscaped desert gardens, and I can't think of a better place to get new ideas and inspiration than at the Living Desert. This peaceful and beautiful park is known for its showcase gardens of plants that grow in the Mojave, Colorado, Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts. Walking along the gentle paths, you'll find specimens of barrel cactus, agave and yucca. Turn the corner and you'll find some mallow, cholla and prickly pear cactus. Many of these drought tolerant plants can go 2-3 months without water in the scorching desert heat. My guide Glenn explained that one of the most amazing and useful desert plants is the fragrant creosote bush. Its leaves are used for healing by native Indians and its tangled roots as shelter by desert animals. If you are ever in the desert after a rainstorm, the smell of creosote is unmistakable. At the Living Desert, you'll also find desert trees such as the Joshua Tree, Mesquite Tree and ...
