Wirelessly Charging Electrical Vehicles

A Stanford University research team has designed a high-efficiency charging system that uses magnetic fields to wirelessly transmit large electric currents between metal coils placed several feet apart. The long-term goal of the research is to develop an all-electric highway that wirelessly charges cars and trucks as they cruise down the road. The vehicle is based on the i-MiEV currently sold in Japan and Europe. For American tastes the name was shortened to a single lower-case letter while the vehicle itself was lengthened and widened to meet American tastes and crash standards. The Mitsubishi i electric car will go on sale starting in the end of 2011 but Kelley Blue Book got an early test drive in Japan, an adventure retold in this video.
