Frohman's Motor

Frohman's MotorElectric motor was created by Paul Gustave Frohman in 1844. It was one of the first motors used in industry. Its design is as follows: voltage is applied to electric magnets that draw iron bars installed at the rotating cage. After an iron bar reaches the same level as an electric magnet, the motor stops generating current until one more iron bar is within a reach. This motor includes a switch to switch on/off the electric magnet.Such motor has two distinctive features. It does not transform power into mechanical energy through as reciprocating motors do. Power capacity enables to use such motors for industrial purposes. Note that this motor could yield 1.5 kW; only the lack of a cheap power source restrained its distribution across industries. After such power source has been discovered, motors became widely used in manufacturing. Moreover, in 19th century Frohman's motors combined with a small pump were often used in laboratories to demonstrate energy transformation processes.
