Ernie Kovacs - The Nairobi Trio "Solfeggio" - ABC Television Network Videotaped Version

[From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - Although it is posted all over YT, no tribute site would be complete without Kovacs' signature comedy sketch. Of course, it's The Nairobi Trio's syncopated rendition of Robert Maxwell's "Solfeggio". As if you didn't already know, the costumed gorilla with the cigar in his mouth is Ernie. The pianist's curly blond locks suggest that it is his wife Edie Adams. The timpanist has never been identified but, in this particular performance, his apparent small stature suggests it is Kovacs' sidekick the late Bobby Lauher. At other times, the role was reported to have been played by Ernie's best friend Jack Lemmon, Milton Berle, and the Chairman of the Board himself, Frank Sinatra.

Ernie Kovacs as Percy Dovetonsils

Kovacs was a pioneer of TV comedy in the 1950's, edging closer, I think, to performance art than what people typically think of as comedy. Even with Percy Dovetonsils the comedy is odd, low key, and character generated, even though there is a poetic punch line toward the end.

Ernie Kovacs - "Mack the Knife" without O-scope / Blackout Ending with The Nairobi Trio

[From "Kovacs Corner" on YouTube.com] - In one of his last scheduled "specials', this is a classic Kovacs endings which wraps around various comedy blackouts. Kovacs' "Mack the Knife" sequence was usually accompanied with an oscilloscope's waveform display of the song. Apparently in this episode Ernie was pressed for time and needed to forego those clips. "Mack the Knife" was composed in 1928 by Kurt Weill for his then wife Lotte Lenya, the late Austrian cabaret singer, stage, and film actress . (For those who don't recall, she was the female villain in the second Bond film "From Russia with Love" who tried to kill Sir James with the pointed dagger that popped out from her shoe). Ernie's regulars included Jolene Brand, Bobby Lauher, and Joe Mikolas. Ernie's theme song is, of course, the recording of "Oriental Blues" by Robert Maxwell. The Nairobi Trio end the show with their rendition of the tune "Solfeggio".
