| Me and Matt paddling the Jurassic coast.........not very successfully."Early bird catches the worm" and "First up,best dressed" are sayings often quoted for getting a result.But this is the UK and the weather doesn't always play ball.When the wind comes from a westerly direction,quite often it gets up around noon.Conversely,it often dies away,come the evening.Quite often,not always.On this day,it did indeed freshen up around noon,as we were putting in.The morning was lovely,light winds,warm,sunny,well it was August,and so it should be.I've been wanting to paddle this coast from the very day I took up kayaking,and I was very excited at being here,on a good day,and knowing it would be potentially very special.By the time we'd left Kimmeridge Bay,my hopes were dashed.We pressed on,and tried to make the best of it,but the wind seemed to be gusty,and was threatening to increase all the time.Passing Gad cliff,a spectacular outcrop of shale type rock,topped with a crust of limestone,at the far end is a small rocky bay called Pondfield,where we seeked solace from the blustery wind.We basically had lunch here,and waited for the wind to ease - it didn't,so after a bit of sightseeing,a rather lumpy ride back to Kimmeridge.The scenery was special,and the sun shone,but it's Kayaking we're here for,and a lumpy sea like that takes all the fun away for me.The day after,was very windy,so I did some sightseeing - Tyneham Village,Lulworth and Durdle door,followed by a Curry in Weymouth ... |
