Kazak anger over Borat anthem hiccup

Kazakhstan's shooting team has demanded an apology after a spoof national anthem from the comedy film Borat was played instead of the real one at a medal ceremony in Kuwait, the BBC reports. The team's coach told Kazakh media the organisers of the Kuwait tournament had downloaded the parody from the internet by mistake and had also got the Serbian national anthem wrong. Footage of Thursday's original ceremony shows gold medallist Maria Dmitrienko listening solemnly to the anthem before smiling. The ceremony was later rerun. The spoof anthem, from the movie featuring British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, praises Kazakhstan for its superior potassium exports and for having the cleanest prostitutes in the region.

Казак (2012)

Тимофея Петрова выбирают новым атаманом казачьей станицы. К нему обращается бизнесмен из Петербурга, Зарецкий, и просит продать ему станичную землю под строительство завода. Предыдущий атаман отказал Зарецкому -- ведь на этой земле казаки хотят построить церковь. Дочь Петрова, Катя, живет в Петербурге и поет в фольклорном ансамбле, и однажды на корпоративной вечеринке Катю похищают. Катя успевает позвонить отцу и сообщить, где она находится. Девушку избивают и выбрасывают из машины. Петров срочно приезжает в Петербург. Недалеко от деревни Ушанки в канаве он находит полумертвую Катю. Атаман отвозит Катю в больницу -- она без сознания, и врачи не могут гарантировать, что девушка будет жить. Теперь Петров хочет только одного -- найти обидчиков дочери и отомстить им. Kazakh film director, Rakishev, who made a film in response to Borat, states, "It's easy to cross the line between a joke and an insult". Over the past twenty years Kazakhstan has slowly risen to become a prosperous nation. President Nazarbayev has aimed to 'modernise' the oil rich country, even building a city from scratch. With cutting edge architecture and glittering shopping malls, his people argue, "he is promoting the Kazakh people to a bright future". Whether his presidency has been democratic or not, many Kazakhis feel he has helped the country progress. Yet a closer look shows a country still hosting profound problems.
