The Hidden Cost of H.264

The cost is only part of the H.264 story. First, consider what the MPEG committee themselves are saying about H.264 (aka MPEG4 Part10): Article excerpt (quote) "The MPEG group had this to say about the use of these MPEG based codecs in security - "Generally speaking it is an unsafe policy to use these codecs for highly sensitive applications. For example, when taking a recording of an event and requiring a high resolution single frame (as might be the requirement in many circumstances) the possibility of achieving this with MPEG/H264 is unlikely -- street scenes, shopping mall and anywhere single frame close identification is required should NOT be recorded using MPEG/H264 codecs. It should be noted that the MPEG committee is mainly concerned with video and audio for entertainment"." Article reference www.initsys.net H.264 was designed for forward streaming applications such as movie entertainment - not security. The two have very different requirements. While H.264 is excellent for streaming high resolution images, it is not designed to be played back in slow-mode and allow for extraction of high quality still images from anywhere in the recorded stream, which is an absolute must in a security application. This is not an inherent strength of H.264. Surveillance is about finding the right still frame and be able to zoom in to ID a person or event. Adobe's New Flash Codec is "Everyman's HD Platform"....has Improved Beet Stream on YouTube and Blip I have come to think of H.264 as a kind of everyman's HD video production and distribution platform. The encoding software, referred in the industry as a codec, was released by Adobe into the Flash ecosystem in December. It has greatly improved the quality of Beet.TV videos. Let me explain how this works: David edits on Final Cut Pro 6. When he's done editing, he sets the encoding option to H.264 and our Mac renders a .MOV file. Although we don't shoot in HD, the resulting videos look really great. But the real value is how the files look when they are uploaded to Blip.tv and YouTube, where there is a dramatic improvement. We get a lot of compliments about the quality of our video. Using H.264 has been key to the improved quality. Sure, it's not HD in the pure sense, but it's a big step forward and it's easy and inexpensive. Earlier this month I was at Adobe's San Francisco offices to talk with Kevin Towes. Kevin gives an overview of the evolution of the Adobe Flash Player and the various codecs that have been used over the years. He explains the significance of the introduction of H.264. IP cameras and codecs: H.264, MPEG-4, JPEG and MxPEG

For your security system, do you want a video codec designed for entertainment or surveillance? While most IP video camera manufactures will have you believe otherwise, both are not the same. That's right there are codecs being used in security camera systems that are primarily designed for entertainment, not surveillance. While H.264 is excellent for streaming, but streaming is only one aspect; the key with security recording is being able to record movement in high quality in each frame - this is not a strong point of H264.
