Diagnose Central Heating Problems : HomeServe Top Tip

www.homeserve.com - It's unnerving when your central heating goes kaput. But don't worry because as long as long as you have a spare few hours, this guide will talk you through the tricky job of working out where the problem is.. Step 1 No heating If you've got no heating at all, first check that the thermostat hasn't been set too low. The boiler will only work if the heating has been set higher than room temperature. Also check that the timer hasn't been set to come on at 4 in the morning instead of 4 in the afternoon. Finally, before phoning in the experts, check the boiler is switched on at the local isolator and at the boiler itself. Look for unusual flashing lights on the boiler control panel and check the water pressure is over 0.8 Bar. If this is all fine, check that the pilot light in your gas boiler works. If it doesn't, there are usually instructions as to how to re-light it on the inside of the boiler door. Step 2: Noisy boiler If your boiler makes all sorts of odd banging and bumping noises, and you live in a house with a conventional boiler, then there may be a lack of water in the header tank. Take a look in your loft, where you should find the tank, and make sure that it's topped up with water. If not, there may be a frozen pipe, airlock or even the mains water has been switched off. If the header tank seems OK, it sounds like your system's choking with sludge, so call in the professionals to drain that gloop away Step 3: Water leaking from central heating ...

How to save energy in your home - HomeServe Video Guide

www.homeserve.com - This guide will show you how to save energy in the home so you can reduce your heating, hot water and electrity bills. Step 1 Insulate Insulation makes an enormous difference to the cost of heating and should be top of your list of energy-saving measures. See ""How to insulate your home"" for more details. Step 2: Turn Off! It might seem like a little thing to turn the main lights off when you're not in the room but it makes a big difference to our overall energy consumption. And don't forget all the other mini energy guzzlers like laptops, printers, scanners, speakers, routers and keyboards. You don't have to know what all these things do to understand that they make our homes even more power-hungry. And turn them off properly - don't just leave them in standby mode. Basically, if it's got a little light on - turn it off. Step 3: Get some energy saving lightbulbs Energy saving bulbs use 80% less power than normal lightbulbs but produce the same amount of light. For each bulb you change you're cutting your CO2 output by 26 grams per year, plus your saving 7 quid on your electricity bill. And that's for each bulb. Throw in the fact that they last ten times longer than normal bulbs and what are you waiting for! Step 4: Get A Greenhouse Gas Meter Another good way of preserving energy is to buy an electricity-saving device called Electrisave. Essentially it's a meter that tells you how many kilos of greenhouse gases your house is consuming per hour and ...

How To Fix A Cold Radiator : HomeServe Video Guide

www.homeserve.com - If your radiators are playing up, then finding what the problem is can be a tricky job, but if you've got a few hours free - then this guide will show you how it's done. Step 1 All the radiators are cool or lukewarm It might sound obvious but first check that you have turned your heating on. If everything's on but all of your radiators are still cold at the top, your heating system could be full of a sludge. Give the professionals a call to come round and desludge the system for you. Step 2: One radiator stays cool If all your radiators except one are working, there are a couple of things you can do to get the cold one playing ball. First check both valves on the the sides of the radiator are open, and if a thermostatic valve is fitted, remove the top and check the operating pin moves freely. Then try turning off all other radiators and seeing if that one gets hot. If it does - turn the other radiators on one by one. If it still won't work then the valve might be damaged. "How to replace a damaged radiator valve" will show you how to swap it. Step 3: Cold bottom section of radiator This problem tends to be caused by sludge in the radiator. Take the radiator off, get it outside and hose it through. Watch "How to temporarily remove a radiator for decorating" to see how. Step 4: Top section of the radiator is cold If the bottom of your radiator is heating up but not the top half, it's most likely that air is trapped in the system. It's simple enough to ...

How To Tile A Floor : HomeServe Video Guide

www.homeserve.com Tiling a floor or decorating a bathroom is a complicated job, but if you follow this simple guide, you can do a job even a professional would be proud of. Step 1 You will need floor tiles tile spacers adhesive pencil grout tile cutter spreader floor sealer damp cloth Step 2: Set out the Tiles First mark the mid-points of all the walls and draw a pair of lines that cross in the centre of the room in chalk. Then place your tiles along the two lines to work out the best positions. It's worth adjusting their positions slightly to use as many whole tiles as possible, and you should always avoid having cut tiles along the wall that is seen as you walk into the room. Step 3: Apply Adhesive Spread a square metre of the adhesive into one of the corners formed by the chalk lines. Top Tip: Always use a notched trowel or spreader so that the adhesive is spread in evenly sized ribbons across the floor Step 4: Lay The Tiles When tiling the floor, it is vital to work outwards from the centre of the room, using the chalk lines as a guide, as internal walls are rarely straight. Start tiling, placing spacers between each tile and continue until you have covered half the room with as many whole tiles as possible. Then start on the other side of the line. Step 5: Fill The Gaps Now fill in the gaps with cut tiles. Use a tile cutter to trim the tiles to size. Top Tip: Before you cut, make sure you have allowed for the grouting gap between tiles and if you have to cut around ...
