euronews hi-tech - Cebit and wonder

www.euronews.com At Cebit, Europe's biggest electronics show held in Hanover, there were lots of new gizmos and gadgets on display. More than 4200 companies from 70 countries were there to show off their new products. The theme however was "Managing Trust: Internet security and data protection|. The German Federal Printing House, the state service that prints money, stamps and official documents, was at the show to present the new German Identity Card. It is more secure because instead of using a magnetic strip which is easy to clone, it features new encryption technology. Using this card with a reader, users can identify themselves from home, connect to public offices, receive all kind of documents via the internet and also use it like a bank card to withdraw money. Martin Gosen, the Head of Communication at the Bundesdruckerei said: "I think authentication trust is one of the main aspects of real business and this card will increase trust within digital business." At IBM they presented the Secure Desktop, which enables users to access their entire desktop, including their OS, apps and data, from anywhere in the world. The secret is this stick which gives access via a secure connection to the user's data stored in the cloud. Sean Rooney, a researcher at IBM, said: "We believe that we don't want to be lugging around large devices like this through airports and so on because it's unpleasant. What we prefer to do is simply go to an arbitrary computer, one which we've never ...

euronews hi-tech - France's tweeting toddlers

www.euronews.com They start them young at a primary school at Siarrouy in the Haute-Pyrénées of south-west France. Since November 2011 they have been learning to write, not with a pen, but with a computer keyboard. Some of them are already tweeting at just five years old. Twitter is playing an increasing role in French classrooms. Teachers are using it more and more with ever younger pupils. It is a simple idea. The teacher writes the message that they want to send on the board - then the children tap it into the computer. The youngsters can not even read and write yet, but their teacher says it is a useful exercise to develop spelling and to form thoughts. Olivier Menadier explained: "When you ask some youngsters, 'what could we write?' they answer, 'My Dad is strong.' That's got nothing to do with what we were talking about. So to get them to take account of what the others are saying about constructing a phrase is also an important goal." The classroom Twitter account is closely controlled. No-one can read the messages without the teacher's say-so. Here, the children do not send messages to their parents like other classes do. Here, they correspond with Canadian classmates in Calgary. One mother, Sophie Herkenrath said: "It's all part of a child's working toolbox now, you can't side-step the internet and all its possibilities, so it's rather good. Afterwards, it's like everything. You have to set a framework and limits and above all explain well the interest in this ...

euronews hi-tech - Spotlight on MIDO

www.euronews.com MIDO, the International Optics, Optometry and Ophthalmology Exhibition, is the leading global eyewear trade show held in Milan. This year it attracted more than 1000 exhibitors from more than 40 countries all over the world. From the very largest global players to the smallest start-ups, everyone was there. MIDO is a chance for opticians, eye specialists and buyers from across the globe to network and source products. Polaroid's 3D glasses are equipped with unique premium 3D circular polarized lenses. Eva Dudek, the project manager with Polaroid Eyewear, said: "There are actually two big 3D technologies right now in the market, one is active that works with frames with batteries, one is passive which uses circular polarisation. All the glasses that Polaroid produces in 3D have circular polarisation and can be used in any passive 3D device such as cinema or 3D TVs." Electromagnetic pollution break-up poses a health risk. Italian company i.Care has developed technology based on activated silicon bio-magnets capable of converting harmful electro-smog frequencies in harmonic body forces. Professor Flavio Gazzola, an expert in electronic medical checkups, explained: "Bio-magnets are silicon microchips capable of protecting the body from the effects of electro-smog aligning the chaotic energy of electro-smog in harmony with the body's forces." Sole Amico - the Sun Friend - was also unveiled at MIDO. It is a free app for iPhone, iPad and Android smartphones ...

euronews hi-tech - Look no hands! Brainpower keeps chess in check

www.euronews.com In Berlin they have a unique way of playing chess. The player sits motionless and, as if by magic, his pieces move around the board. His brainwaves are being harnessed so he can play just by thinking about the next move. The secret is in the headgear developed by researchers from Berlin's Institute of Technology. Researcher Michael Tangermann explained: "What we are seeing here is a brain-computer interface. It is a connection between the computer and the brain and it reads the intention of the player and then converts it into a move. The player just needs to imagine which pawn he wants to move and where, then the computer recognises that and makes the move. So, the person can play without using his hands." Several electrodes measure brain activity in key areas and detect which piece the player intends to move. As soon as the player puts on the special cap, a system calibrates the software to recognise his or her specific traits. The brain-computer interface is not just for fun and games though. It could have serious medical applications, helping patients with severe motor neuron damage, for instance, to communicate with the outside world. "The research behind this demonstration is to help severely motor-impaired patients, who are not in a position to make chess moves or maybe not even able to communicate," Tangermann added. "But often patients are still cognitively just as capable as everyone else. So, we want to give them the possibility to show us what ...

euronews hi-tech - Robots reveal Titanic secrets

www.euronews.com The wreck of the Titanic lay undisturbed for 73 years, at depths of up to 12000 feet under water. It was discovered in 1985, by a team of American and French researchers using a newly-developed ultra-sensitive sonar system, combined with advanced acoustic technology. The sinking of the Titanic has a macabre fascination for scientists and the public alike and researchers have been exploring the wreck since 1985. In 1986 a small underwater robot named Jason Junior or "JJ" produced the first images of the ship on the ocean floor. JJ was tethered to a manned submersible, nicknamed Alvin, hovering just metres away. But now with advanced communications and guidance systems, a new generation of vehicles is able to dive deeper, and remain submerged for longer. Much of this new technology was developed at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Falmouth, Massachusetts. The latest is Nereus, which can operate as an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) or a robot. Nereus can collect samples or conduct experiments using its robotic manipulator arm. It works on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, similar to those used in cell phones and laptop computers. Battery life is around 20 hours and it takes six hours to recharge. Using computer programme systems designed for flying drones and modifying other computer programmes, Bowen's team helped introduce robotic guidance controls to undersea exploration. The connection for commands and information flow is a light, flexible ...

euronews hi-tech - Sea solution to future energy needs

www.euronews.net In Dartmouth, in the UK, technicians are working on a sort of "aquatic bicycle pump" which could be the future of renewable energy. In tests, the Searaser has produced enough energy to power a light bulb, but this is only a prototype and the finished Searaser will be around 13 times bigger than this. Alvin Smith, the inventor of Searaser said: "It is really only a bicycle pump with a float on it. As this pump goes up and down it sucks sea water and pumps sea water out, purely through the action of the waves." He came up with the idea about 10 years ago while playing with an inflatable ball in a swimming pool. Searaser pumps seawater using a vertical piston between two buoys - one on the surface of the water, the other suspended underwater and tethered to a weight on the seabed. Alvin Smith explained: "You have got the Searaser in the water that will be operated by the waves and swell, anything from half a metre swell or more it will work. You pump it to a tank or reservoirs then you can hydro on demand electricity through your turbine." As the ocean swell moves the buoys up and down, the piston works like a pump, sending seawater through a pipe to an onshore turbine to produce electricity.or to a coastal storage reservoir. It can then be released through a generator as required. The ideal site for the machines is in water about 25m deep near a cliff face. Alvin Smith says that the most important aspect of Searaser is that it means low-carbon energy can be ...
