Hardy Hibiscus such as Pink Clouds, and Disco Bell Rosy Red love to be planted and grown in a sun loving area, with adequate moisture levels. Hibiscus can and will come up late in colder areas of the state, sometimes like here in Iowa at the end of May. The ground temperatures need to be warm and this then tells the hibiscus it is time to pop out of the ground. There is different sizes of hibiscus , but most of the hardy ones give you dinner size blossoms that bloom for a day, and they produce loads of blossoms in a short period of time , Making them a delight to grow in your perennial gardens. Collecting of seed can be done in the fall months , here in Iowa I like to do it when the seed pods turn brown and start to pop open , this is usually Sept to October months. After they are cut off of the plant, store inside somewhere where they can continue to dry, then worked the pods and get the seeds out of them and store in a dry bag in a cool but not cold area. Basement works well.. Hardy Hibiscus if a hybrid do not come true to the parent plant, so when you plant your seeds next year, you will get a surprise of different colors, that is why it is fun to experiment with growing them from seed.
