Moving Right - France

Le Pen battles Far Left rival for place in French Assembly To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Hollande may have won the French elections, but Far Right leader Marine Le Pen attracted record support and is showing no signs of slowing down. So what's next for the party and its controversial ambitions? "I think we will come to power within a few years. The whole of Europe is becoming aware of the loss of our values." Le Pen's anti-EU, anti-immigration stance found many sympathetic ears during the Presidential campaigns and The National Front now has their eye firmly fixed on the National Assembly elections. "We have surprised everyone with the coherence of our views", Le Pen insists, as membership of the Youth Wing of the party has surged. Yet the party's anti-Islamic stance has also alienated many voters and spread fears of rising extremism. If Le Pen gets a seat in the Assembly it will give the party its biggest endorsement for over a decade. "I think she is going to be part of the landscape for many years to come. For better or worse." Guatemala - An American Genocide - September 1999

Beneath the lush green hills of Guatemala lie one hundred thousand corpses, the victims of a genocide funded by the US Government. Around a newly discovered mass grave crowd the weeping relatives of Guatemala's lost generation of Mayan Indians. 20 years ago these Mayan men, women and children were condemned as communist guerrillas and massacred. Until now these killings have been blamed on insurgents and vigilantes. But the army-issue bullets being extracted from these skulls by US forensic archaeologists tell a different story. The 400 newly discovered massacre sites are the handiwork of the Guatemalan Army, but they did not act alone -- the CIA told them how to do it. Fearful of Red-spread right on America's doorstep the Reagan administration armed and trained Guatemala's army to stamp-out the communist threat. Veterans of the Reagan administration make no apology for their political agenda. "It seemed clear to us that if you had a Nicaragua in Guatemala, what you've got is... a Soviet style government with secret police agents on the border of Mexico", explains Eliot Abrahms, the then Assistant Secretary of State. Anything was justified to contain the threat, including as is now revealed, turning a blind eye to genocide. Recently released CIA manuals issued to the army explain how to murder people, they even explain how to enter a room with ten people sitting round a table and murder them one by one. These instructions were used against not only guerrillas but ...

Contract Kids - Switzerland

Switzerland's secret shame For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Generations of Swiss children lost their childhoods to state-endorsed abuse and forced labour. This shocking report brings us their stories, shedding light on a little-known dark chapter of Swiss history. "Our Switzerland, which always wants to be goodie-goodies, has so many skeletons in its cupboard", Maria Magdalena tells us. Right up until 1981 the Swiss state sent thousands of teenagers like Maria to places like Hindelbank women's prison for 're-education'. Accused of being rebellious or promiscuous they were held indefinitely without trial. "I was beaten for everything", Hugo Zingg, who was a so-called 'contract child' recalls. Of the five children on the farm he was forced to work on, he was the only one not to commit suicide. However, possibly the most shocking story is that of Bernette Gechter. Her strictly religious foster parents took her to a doctor at 7 years old, believing she was sexually active. She was diagnosed with a brain disorder and forced to undergo electro-shock therapy. At 18 when she became pregnant, they aborted the baby and sterilized her because they thought she was unfit to be a mother. The survivors are campaigning for recognition, but the Swiss government still refuses to hold a full investigation or discuss remuneration for the victims. Gulf of Despair - USA

Toxic legacy of BP disaster lives on To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Two years after the Gulf of Mexico disaster BP say the area is back in business. But in reality oil is washing up on the beaches, local residents are falling ill and the peak of the crisis is yet to come. "We are glad to report all beaches and waters are open", states BP in a new advertising campaign. For the oil company business can resume as normal, but for the communities whose livelihoods rely upon the waters around the Gulf of Mexico business could not be worse: "there are no oysters growing so our future is very uncertain". Moreover, many locals who volunteered during the clear up are now suffering potentially fatal health problems caused by toxins in the chemical BP used to disperse the oil, Corexit 9527. "They are having breathing problems, headaches, breaking out in rashes, asthma...", explains a community worker, Glenda Perryman. And there could still be a wider threat to human health; strong evidence suggests the oil has got into the food chain. "We're finding it in larger quantities over a one-year period after the spill, so it's bio-accumulating. It's going to impact on generations to come", says Wilma Subra, an environmental scientist. As with the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska, it will take a few more years before the real impact of this spill is felt. For those in the locality, that may be too late: "I don't know if I am living ...

The World Tomorrow Episode 6 Trailer

Watch full episode here: www.youtube.com In this weeks episode, President Rafael Correa of Ecuador discusses with Julian whether it's always the case of good media vs corrupt government, and examines his country's relationship with the United States. Discussion opens with the circumstances surrounding the attempted coup de tat in Ecuador in 2010, during which the president was taken hostage. From there this weeks interview moves on to the key relationships between media, money and the interests of the United states that are at play in Ecuador. Following the coup attempt, Correa embarked on a furious and controversial counter offensive on Ecuador's media. He attributes the media's influence over the events of 2010 to the vested interests of corporate power and its control of Ecuador's media, now explosively claiming corporate owners of the media "disguised as journalists, are trying to do politics, to destabilise our governments so that no change takes place in our region, for fear of losing the power they have always flaunted".

The Paved Paradise - Bali

Rampant tourism destroying Bali For Downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Over the last 40 years Bali has gone from being a spiritual, low-key holiday destination to an international tourist hot spot. Now it's stretched to breaking point, with a waste problem that's out of control. Since the late 1970's the number of tourists visiting Bali each year has exploded to well over two and a half million. Combined with the local population, Bali generates thousands of tons of rubbish each day that floats down the rivers and out to the sea, piling up on the world famous Kuta Beach. There's a growing resistance - particularly among young Bali locals - to this rampant development on the island and tourism at any cost. Yet farmers are still selling their land to developers, fuelling a real estate boom that's driving prices through the roof. "Tourists are not destroying Bali, the greedy investors are destroying Bali", says Bali's governor, Made Pastika. For locals, like surf legend Mega, Bali stands to lose more that just its beautiful natural environment. "If every place is like Kuta with high-rise buildings everywhere then Bali is not like Bali anymore. If that happens it's like our souls are lost."
