360° Omnidirectional Camera : DigInfo

DigInfo - movies.diginfo.tv The omnidirectional camera, developed by Nippon Seiki can take a 360° image of the surrounding area with just one camera. Useful in a range of applications where more than one camera is currently used such as home or office security systems, the image produced can be post-processed by computer software. The software can show the original circular image, as well as a modified panoramic display. The camera is available in three enclosures, cone, egg and pole for different environments and can be connected to the PC or network by an ethernet, NTSC or USB connection.

Extrinsic Calibration of a 3D Laser Scanner and an Omnidirectional Camera (Result 1)

In the first few frames we have shown the 3D point cloud generated by the velodyne laser scanner and then we render the colored point cloud. The color is obtained by projecting the 3D point cloud onto the corresponding camera image.

An Application of Omnidirectional Vision to Grid-based SLAM in Indoor Environments

In this work we study the use of omnidirectional camera for the estimation of a consistent metric representation of an indoor scenario. The proposed approach is based on Rao- Blackwellized Particle Filters and allows the robot to use a single vision sensor for estimating an occupancy grid map of the environment. The prediction phase of the filter is performed by means of an accurate visual odometry algorithm, whereas the update phase is based on floor segmentation, allowing to treat the omnidirectional camera in full similarity with laser- based approaches to SLAM. The technique is validated in simulation and through real experiments and it is shown to perform consistent map estimation while reducing the costs and the equipment of the robotic system.

Here we have projected the 3D point cloud onto the corresponding camera images. The reprojections are colored based on height above the ground plane and we have removed the ground plane points just to avoid clutter in the video.
