Crossrail: The Route

This video shows the route on the planned Crossrail London service due to open in 2018. If the video is a bit fuzzy tell me and i will try to improve it. This route will take the Shenfield Metro service and the Heathrow Connect and Express services.

Crossrail Farringdon Station - progress update, Spring 2012

Farringdon Station is right at the heart of the Crossrail route. When complete, it is planned that over 140 trains per hour will flow through the Farringdon interchange when it becomes a link between Thameslink, Crossrail and London Underground services. Farringdon will be the only station from which passengers will be able to access all three networks. It will become one of Britain's busiest train stations, and will be a key link in bringing passengers from outer London to the business hubs in the City and Canary Wharf. Tunnel Boring Machines ready for London's Crossrail tunnel project

Eight giant tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are ready to start carving 42km of tunnels across London for Crossrail. Experience can be learned from Taiwan's Hsuehshan tunnel project, one of the toughest project's ever. Tunnelling through Taiwan's Hsuehshan range involved navigating folds and cracks in rock and quartz, and huge amounts of underground water. During the first 18 months of digging the tunnel collapsed nine times. Rock fractures constantly crippled the TBM, while surging groundwater often flooded the work site.

Moorgate Crossrail construction time-lapse

This time lapse sequence was shot over three days from a public walkway as a huge Weldex crawler crane was installed on the site of the Crossrail development at Moorgate, London, EC2. This is preliminary work for the construction of a shaft and tunnel that will connect Liverpool Street station with London Underground's Northern Line at Moorgate. 88000 sq ft of office and retail space will then be built above the western ticket hall shaft at 101 Moorgate. For more information on Crossrail: www.crossrail.co.uk This time-lapse sequence consists of approximately 5000 individual frames. The construction site is extremely difficult for the building contractors to work in as it is very small and just happens to be in the middle of the City of London. It was also extremely difficult to get good footage for the time-lapse images. The lighting conditions were changing all the time and it was difficult to predict exactly where equipment would be in advance. And there was only one place to shoot from. Also large cranes tended to get in the way...

Construction progress at Canary Wharf Crossrail station, June 2011

Canary Wharf will be one of the largest Crossrail stations. Like the nearby Canary Wharf Tube station, the new Crossrail station will be built in dock water, in this case the North Dock of West India Quay. The station and proposed retail and park areas will be six storeys high; approximately the size of One Canada Square laid on its side. Construction of the Crossrail project began at North Dock in Canary Wharf in May 2009. Since then the construction team has driven over 1000 piles and pumped nearly 100 million litres of dock water - the equivalent to 40 Olympic swimming pools. Approximately 300000 tonnes of material has been excavated from beneath the dock bed and almost 375000 tonnes of concrete poured. The piling machines that constructed the dam use a 'silent' technique, powered by hydraulics. They are specially made by a Japanese company called Giken -- one of the first times the technique has been used in the UK, although it is extensively used in Japan. All of the water -- nearly 100 million litres, or 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools - has been pumped out to create the worksite, revealing a spectacular hole 260 metres long and between between 45 metres and 48 metres wide. Canary Wharf Contractors Limited, the construction arm of Canary Wharf Group, has created a station box that is more than 250m long and 30m wide, approximately the same size as One Canada Square laid on its side. Twenty-eight metres below the surface of the dock, twin 7.6m diameter rings are now ...

Goodbye London Astoria - Hello Crossrail

Historic London Music Venue Knocked Down The London Astoria was a music venue, located at 157 Charing Cross Road, in London, England. It had been leased and run by Festival Republic since 2000. It was closed on 15 January 2009 and has since been demolished. The venue is still seen today as an iconic music establishment, due to launching the careers of many British rock bands and the UK success of many international acts. Originally a warehouse during the 1920s, the building became a cinema and ballroom. The building was converted for use as a theatre in the 1970s. After further conversion, the building re-opened in the mid 1980s, as a night club and live music venue for well known musical acts. In 2009, the venue closed for the last time to make way for development of the Crossrail project.

Crossrail tunnelling strategy animation, March 2012

Crossrail is Europe's biggest infrastructure project on a scale not seen since the Jubilee Line Extension or the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. It will transform rail journeys, providing much needed additional transport capacity as well as reducing congestion on the Tube. When it opens in 2018 Crossrail will connect 28 existing Network Rail stations to the West End, the City and Canary Wharf through 21km of new, twin-bore tunnels under central London. The new tunnels will connect 7 brand-new, state of the art underground stations at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel and Canary Wharf. They'll bring existing London Underground and rail networks just a few steps away. Each tunnel will be 6.2m in diameter -- significantly larger than any Tube tunnel. The tunnels will weave their way between existing London Underground lines, sewers, tunnels and building foundations as they snake from station to station at depths of up to 40m. Designing Crossrail's stations, August 2011

Around 200 million passengers will travel on Crossrail each year and the route will provide a 10% increase to rail capacity in the capital. The new stations need to cope with large numbers of passengers throughout their life, be easy to navigate and able to endure wear and tear. To create this transport legacy for London it is essential to ensure every fixture and component is fit for purpose, cost effective and built to last. During the detailed design phase, some of the UK's best known architects worked with world-class engineering firms to finalise the designs for eight of the new Crossrail stations. Each of the new Crossrail stations will have a distinctive but consistent design. For further information about Crossrail visit: www.crossrail.co.uk www.crossrail.co.uk

Crossrail time lapse video: Paddington Integrated Project,

This time-lapse video shows Crossrail, London Underground and Network Rail working side by side at Paddington station during a three week blockade of the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines last summer. The blockade was essential for the construction of Paddington station's new taxi facilities and eventual relocation of taxis from Departures Road. Only when the taxis are relocated can the construction of the new Crossrail Paddington Station begin in earnest. In addition, this blockade was required for the new Hammersmith & City line station. We accomplished a large amount during the blockade, including the demolition of a disused taxi ramp and a canopy that sits above the Hammersmith & City line platforms, platform extension works to accommodate new longer, air-conditioned trains, installing energy efficient conductor rail and track replacement and drainage works. In addition, a redundant London Underground ticket hall, a cable bridge and a lift shaft were demolished and an old staircase on Network Rail platform 13/14. Crossrail also undertook piling work on the Hammersmith & City line platforms during this period for the new station's foundations. London Underground also took advantage of the blockade to carry out essential renewal and upgrade works, which otherwise would have required weekend closures.
