Art:21 | Lari Pittman

Inspired by commercial advertising, folk art, and decorative traditions, Lari Pittman's meticulously layered paintings transform pattern and signage into luxurious scenes. Meditations on romantic love, violence, and mortality, his work demonstrates the complementary nature of beauty and suffering, pain and pleasure. In a manner both visually gripping and psychologically strange, Pittman's hallucinatory works reference myriad aesthetic styles, from Victorian silhouettes to social realist murals to Southwestern kitsch. Lari Pittman is featured in the Season 4 episode "Romance" of the Art21 series "Art in the Twenty-First Century". Learn more about Lari Pittman: www.art21.org © 2007 Art21, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Lari Pittman at GLADSTONE, Frank Stella at KASMIN

Some Thursdays are just too full of great openings to concentrate on one so, James Kalm brings viewers this doubleheader of great art. Lari Pittman emerged in the mid 1990s with a unique vision of West Coast painting. His use of graphic styles, masked paint forms, spray paint and text propelled him to international prominence. Frank Stella's "Geometric Progressions" at Paul Kasmin is a timely review of some of his most recognizable paintings. This series, from the late 1960's, is a very relevant exhibition for younger artists newly attracted to high Formalism and Late Modernist artistic theory

Five in Ten

James Kalm risks giving viewers whiplash, as he attempts to report on five shows in ten minutes. With the coming holiday season, Chelsea is swamped with an embarrassment of riches. This high-speed tour begins with the abstractions of Tomma Abts at David Zwirner. From there we jog to 303 and breeze through the recent painting by Djordje Ozbolt. A respite is called for as we contemplate the large painterly works of Terry Winters at Matthew Marks, just before we catch our breath and head for a glimpse of the mirrored panels of Michaelangelo Pistoletto at Luhring Augustine. We wrap up with a zippy viewing of the California painter Lari Pittman at Gladstone gallery.
