Portrait Lighting for Photography and Video!

There are several lighting positions that photographers have developed over the years. People like George Hurrell, who used tungsten to shoot stars, used these lighting positions. Learn to identify what a butterfly or Rembrandt light is. Knowing these positions, and where the light placed to create them, will help you see how photographers light their images. These are departure points from which you will create your own look and direction. Its hard to depart from someplace you have never been there. This will teach you the basics and give you a good foundation to build on. This video is not as slick as some of the others we have done but it has great basic instructions on portrait lighting. (Don't miss the ending its the most exciting part!)

London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay: The lighting ceremony in Olympia

With just 78 days until the London 2012 Games begin and under sunny skies, the Olympic flame has been lit in Ancient Olympia during a ceremony organized by the Hellenic Olympic Committee. The flame was created using the sun's rays and a parabolic mirror by the high Priestess -- Ino Menegaki -- at the Temple of Hera. It was then carried into the Ancient Olympic Stadium in a choreographed procession before being used to light the torch of the first torchbearer - British-born Greek open water swimming world champion and three-time Olympian Spyros Gianniotis. The flame will now be taken on an eight-day relay around Greece before being handed over to the London 2012 Organising Committee during a ceremony in Athens at the Panathenaic stadium, ahead of it being taken back to Great Britain, where the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay -- presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung -- gets underway on 19 May.

Reflectors: A Lighting Tutorial

By Jay P. Morgan. In this Slanted Lens lighting tutorial we take a look at the basics of reflectors and how to use them on location. We shot Liz Hernandez from E-TV on location at the Ultimate Grave Yard and had a great shoot. From this shoot we are going to take a beginning look at reflectors, the different colors and practical application examples on how to use them. As a beginning photographer, using a reflector is an easy way to start to modify light and learn where to place the light source in relationship to your subject. Using reflectors and becoming good at placing them will teach you how to place strobes. Good light placement is the same for both strobes and reflectors but easier to see with a reflector than it is with strobes. Street Lights Are Spying on You 'Intellistreets' Systems Now Being Installed in US

Talking surveillance cameras that bark orders at passers-by and can also record conversations are heading for US streets, with manufacturer Illuminating Concepts announcing the progress of its 'Intellistreets' system. As we first reported last year, high tech street lights with "homeland security applications" are now being installed in major US cities. The street lights also have loudspeakers that can give audible warnings to individuals, mimicking the talking surveillance cameras in the UK that shout out orders through microphones telling people to pick up litter or leave the area. A recent press release put out by Amerlux announces the company's partnership with Illuminating Concepts to further advance the rollout of 'Intellistreets'. The announcement confirms that the street lights will have a number of "homeland security features" including a loudspeaker system that will be used to "engage captive audiences". "The built-in speaker can broadcast emergency information," states the press release, adding, "SmartSite luminaires can be equipped with a variety of cameras and sensors to ensure real-time 24/7-security coverage. The sensors detect a variety of threats that enable rapid response from emergency personnel or help prevent crime and gain control of the streets." The press release adds that the SmartSite system developed to operate the 'Intellistreets' surveillance hubs is intended not only for street lighting but also for "retail malls, sports venues, on college ...
