Motherboard Component Repair

I've had it with the stupid comments. If that's your game, just go away. Save me the trouble of deleting your garbage. For those of you want to see an example of a motherboard repair, stay tuned! I picked this computer up from its owners to repair it and heard a rattle. Turns out the motherboard had shed its northbridge heatsink, which will cause problems. I actually managed to *find* that stupid little clip in the case and solder it back on. This video details the fix and its effectiveness. I don't think there has been any lasting damage. After booting Memtest, I booted a minimal version of Knoppix Live Linux on CD (as I only had 650MB CD-RW blanks handy) and that ran fine as well.

This particular motherboard was unsuccessful, however you'll find this simple method of identifying blow capacitors and replacing them is quite easy. Repairing Defective Motherboards

This is a Video clip showing how to spot defective capacitors on a motherboard. An excellent source for ordering replacement capacitors suitable for desktop motherboards is www.badcaps.net Here you will find these specialized capacitors with very low ESR, high ripple current, and low leakage. This motherboard was suffering from 7 defective caps as well as the "Nothbridge" SIS Chipset - the heatsink was never really securing tightly onto the motherboard due to a missing clip-anchor. A "22AWG" wire was used and soldered in place of the non-existant anchor.

NC6000 Motherboard Repair

MAXIM 1987 chip needed to be re-soldered due to flexing of motherboard. (possibly due to very stiff hinges causing the motherboard to flex when the screen is opened and closed.) To reflow the solder a small tool that blows hot air would have been ideal but I didn't have one. So I used a normal soldering iron. Sorry that there is no film of the actual repair. It would have been hard to orchestrate .
