| Map timelapse look at the hundreds of earthquakes that hit Japan after the big Magnitude 9 quake on March 11th. Rather than looking simply at the epicenter and magnitude, this graphic was created using data from thousands of accelerometers around the country, to accurately represent the level of movement someone standing on the ground in each location would actually feel. This is much more descriptive than the wild guess we might make based upon magnitude, distance, depth, plate structure, ground composition, etc. No guesses need to be made because actual ground movement is measured at thousands of points across the country. One second of video represents 1 hour of real time: each day takes 24 seconds of video. I created it at 1080x720, so it's best to view fullscreen at 720p. I live in Kyoto (above the "a" in "Osaka" on the map in the video), and so am out of the thick of it. I wrote about it a bit on my blog as it unfolded: regex.info I can't think of any music that matches the combination of devistation and awe and geekiness encapsulated in this video, but if you can think of any for which rights would be easy to obtain, I'd love to hear suggestions.... |
