Psychology of Belief, Part 4: Misinformation Effect

In this episode, we learn why personal testimony is universally regarded as the weakest form of evidence. Yet despite this fact, personal testimonies are heavily emphasized among religious circles anyway. That says a lot about the value of truth among religious circles, doesn't it?

Misinformed

This is a video I entered in a contest hosted by Worldbook.com and it won me a MacBook! Thanks to everyone who voted for me and made this happen. The video is of a guy who asks a lot of questions and turns to the internet for answers. It explains how dangerous this is because of rampant misinformation on the web. All in comedic fashion.

Fox News Viewers Are Misinformed Study, The Critique

This video is uploaded to HowTheWorldWorks by Lee Doren. A recent study from the University of Maryland and WordPublicOpinion.org supposedly shows that Fox News viewers were more likely to believe false information about American politics. After looking at the supposed 'myths' that Fox News watchers believe, I quickly realized that something was wrong with the study. As a result, I read the study very carefully and realized that the whole study was bogus. Overall, the study about misinformation and the 2010 election did not have data to support its conclusions. In fact, the study may simply demonstrate that Fox News viewers are more informed than the researchers. It was clear that the researchers were unaware of most of the data provided to the public. When conducting this research I looked at a variety of sources. Most of the sources can clearly be seen in the video itself. Below is my attempt to list all the sources in no particular order that I reviewed. Some sources were not used at all. www.worldpublicopinion.org www.worldpublicopinion.org www.worldpublicopinion.org www.huffingtonpost.com tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com thinkprogress.org www.newscorpse.com www.alternet.org gawker.com online.wsj.com www.bls.gov mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com cboblog.cbo.gov cboblog.cbo.gov www.cbo.gov reason.com www.fiscalcommission.gov newsbusters.org patterico.com johnnydollar.us newsbusters.org www.newsbusters.org www.youtube.com www.nytimes.com www.verumserum.com www ...

Is Israel spreading misinformation about Iran?

Washington is pressuring Tehran to accept a UN deal on its nuclear program before the end of this year, but stories on Iran's nuclear intentions keep spreading. Recently reports were circulated that Kazakhstan could be selling uranium ore to Iran for enrichment. Are these stories true or is someone behind them?

The University of Maryland study, called "Misinformation and the 2010 Election," looked at "variations in misinformation by exposure to news sources," among other things, and specifically newspapers and news magazines (in print and online), network TV news broadcasts, NPR and PBS, Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN. The study found that daily Fox News viewers, regardless of political party, were "significantly" more likely than non-viewers to erroneously believe that • Most economists estimate the stimulus caused job losses (12 points more likely) • Most economists have estimated the health care law will worsen the deficit (31 points) • The economy is getting worse (26 points) • Most scientists do not agree that climate change is occurring (30 points) • The stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts (14 points) • Their own income taxes have gone up (14 points) • The auto bailout only occurred under Obama (13 ...
