The Return of Egyptian Icons Since the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak over 5 months ago, Egypt has observed a sudden surge of change in security, government, and particularly media. South Sudan Celebrates Independence At the stroke of midnight on July 9th, residents of South Sudan celebrated their independence, becoming the world's newest nation. The first to recognize the separation was North Sudan's Khartoum government, hours before the partition officially took place. Prior to the division, Sudan was Africa's largest country. Changes to Syrian Regime Discussed in Turkey

Changes to Regime Discussed in Syria On Wednesday, Syrian opposition activists convened at a conference in Antalya, Turkey to discuss changes in the regime and come up with a peaceful transition. The meeting, named "Conference for Change in Syria", concludes on Friday. This took place a day after President Bashar Al-Assad declared a general amnesty for all political prisoners, including members of the Muslim Brotherhood. Angelina Jolie Visits Refugees in Turkey Hollywood actress and Goodwill Ambassador for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Angelina Jolie, travelled to the Turkey-Syria border on June 17th to meet with refugees. Ms. Jolie visited the Altinozu camp in Hatay, located 20 kms from the Syrian border, and met with many refugees who fled their country owing to the escalating violence. On the same day many of the refugees attended a protest against the Syrian government after participating in Friday prayers. Over the past two weeks, it has been estimated that more than 9600 people have been sheltered in camps by the Turkish Red Crescent. Morocco Protests on Constitutional Change On July 3rd, demonstrators of the February 20th uprising in Morocco, took to the streets of the capital, Rabat, protesting the recent referendum that supported constitutional changes made by King Mohammed VI. The opposition voiced concerns about what they called was "an exaggerated turnout" at the polls and laid doubts on the voting procedure. According to the new charter, the government will hold executive powers but the king will retains control of the army, religious authorities and judiciary, and have the right to dissolve parliament. These changes, however, do not address protestors' demands of wanting an electing representative body to initiate reforms. Justice for Al Hariri's Death The United Nations backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon issued indictments and four arrest warrants on June 30th with regards to the investigation on the murder of former Prime Minister Rafik Al Hariri. Details of the indictment were undisclosed however the arrest warrants were made out to four Hezbollah members for their involvement in the 2005 bombing in Beirut that killed Mr. Al Hariri, as well as 22 others. Lebanese authorities now have a month to notify the tribunal of their actions, and if they fail to carry out arrests, the court could begin posting "wanted" adverts in various media.
