Qaddafi victims demand justice

Qaddafi victims demand justice - Libya Victims of former Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi's regime are demanding that their tormentors be put on trial. Nadia Seif, a 59-year-old former prisoner and translator, was detained by Qaddafi's notorious intelligence service for seven months after they killed her husband for plotting to assassinate the late dictator. Nadia's villa was seized, and she was held in a tiny cell, where she says she was raped twice by a guard. Here in a small concrete cell in the Abu Salim prison complex in Tripoli, Nadia returns to visit the place in which she was interrogated, beaten and abused. "I was taken to a prison, and this prison was only men and I was the only woman and I was raped in this prison and I was bleeding and they took me to hospital and the doctor was afraid to make an operation for me because I was very weak. They brought me back to the men's prison and after a while they took me to a place called Jdeidah (women's prison) and I stayed there for two years," said Nadia. Nadia and her husband once lived with their sons in an up-scale neighborhood in Tripoli. Her husband opened a furniture shop after disapproving of and resigning from the intelligence service. He was later arrested along with others for suspicions of plotting to murder Qaddafi. During Nadia's time in prison her sons stayed with their grandparents and her house was turned into a neighborhood interrogation center. "In the new Libya, I'm asking that I should take my rights ...

Constructing the Kaaba

The holy Kaaba is indeed the centre of worship and source of overflowing pure lights. It has been ordained by God as a sacred spot and the first monument to be built in stone. Prophets Adam had set up its pillars while Abraham raised it with Ismail, his son and later the Quraysh would build it too. Abdul Matlab Bin Hashem bestowed on it all types of ornaments and Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, cleansed it for the first time in history after the Conquest of Mecca. Kaaba has been destroyed and rebuilt time and time again. "It was once destroyed during the era of Quraych before the Prophet's mission, peace be upon him. Thus, Quraych tribe decided to rebuild the holy house. But they then said they wouldn't build the house with the money that comes from interest or from white slave dowries or augury. They decided to build it from their clean Halal money", explained Dr. Khaled Babtin, member of Um Qura University teaching committee. Kaaba is surrounded by three of the most holy secrets of Islam: the Black Stone, Abraham's shrine and the well of Zamzam. On the northern side of the Kaaba, there is a small door called the Door of Repentance that differs from the other more majestic external door. Its four corners are adorned with white and colored marble emblazoned with Islamic inscriptions and a back layer of golden garments gives the place its imposing apparel. "In the era of Omar Bin Al Khattab, may God be pleased with him, Al Kaaba used to be covered with the Kibat and ...

As the summer heat approaches, Lebanon's coast prepares for the expected inflow of visitors. Hotels, restaurants and cultural centers are all geared up for this year's long-awaited tourist season. The country's tourism sector will especially gain a boost, because the conflicts that have gripped its neighbors have meant that Lebanon is now one of the few havens of stability in the region. Whilst some citizens remain worried that effects of the unrests in Syria will also affect Lebanon, others, such as Ms. Sara Abu Dhargam, a customer at the seaside resort of Alay, maintain a more positive attitude. UK Residents to Protect Community

On the fourth night of rioting, August 9, thousands of additional police were deployed in England's streets capital London. Many residents came together to protect their communities from further violence and damages. Around 200 residents in south-east London, Eltham, came together to "protect and honor" their neighborhood from attackers who plan to riot in high street. The regional organizer of the far-right English Defence League (EDL), said that the majority of people on the streets of Eltham were "patriots," and not vigilantes. "The police are unable to control the streets. Today these are local people, not EDL, these are patriots who have come out to defend their area. So the EDL has come down, about 50 of us, to manage them and control them and to sort of guide them to make sure they don't move out of order." said Jack England of South East Regional Organizer EDL. Youths in hooded tops clashed with police in Birmingham, smashing windows and raiding shops. Cars were blazed and bricks were thrown towards police. Miracle quake baby stable

A 14-day-old baby and her mother were flown to the Turkish capital of Ankara on Tuesday for further medical treatment. The baby, her mother and grandmother were rescued from the wreckage of an apartment building 48 hours after an earthquake struck. They were brought out alive on stretchers to jubilant cries from onlookers, who were following the dramatic rescue in the pouring rain. The baby's father is still missing, and is presumably in the building's rubble. A medic said the baby was in stable condition. "Our patient's baby is only 14 days old. Her mother fed her under the rubble for two days; therefore the baby's condition is stable. She is sleeping at the moment," the medic said. Relatives said Azra's survival was a miracle; her name means "purity" or "untouched" in Arabic. Rescuers are battling to find survivors of the earthquake, which struck eastern Turkey and has killed more than 400 people. According to officials, Sunday's 7.2-magnitude quake death toll stands at 459; 1352 people have been injured. These figures will probably rise, because many people are still missing and more than 2262 buildings have collapsed. By: Nadia Idriss Mayen Al Arabiya with Agencies
