Stop Nuclear Welfare

Via The Guardian: "The US is facing a $15 trillion national debt, and there is no shortage of opinions about how to move toward deficit reduction in the federal budget. One topic you will not hear discussed very often on Capitol Hill is the idea of ending one of the oldest American welfare programmes -- the extraordinary amount of corporate welfare going to the nuclear energy industry...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down, including comparing this to subsidies for new forms of energy (wind, solar, etc.) along with conservative outrage over Solyndra. *Read more from Bernie Sanders and Ryan Alexander: www.guardian.co.uk Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Iran's Supreme Leader: Nuclear Weapons 'A Sin'

Via McClatchy: "Iran's chief negotiator, Saeed Jalili, took center stage after the day of talks, appearing at a post-conference press briefing under a banner headlined, in English, "Nuclear energy for all, nuclear weapons for none." He referred to the banner — which also had the pictures of five Iranian nuclear scientists who were assassinated, presumably at Israeli behest — and also reaffirmed the fatwa or order by Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, declaring possession of a nuclear weapon to be "a sin"...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from Roy Gutman: www.mcclatchydc.com Which countries have nuclear weapons and how many do they have? www.youtube.com Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Japan shuts last of nuclear reactors

Japan has begun the shutdown process for its last nuclear reactor, making it nuclear energy free for the first time in more than 40 years. All 54 reactors have been temporarily shut down for safety checks, but are subject to public approval before they are restarted. In Tokyo, hundreds of people have rallied to demand that all of the plants remain permanently closed. They say that last year's Fukushima nuclear meltdown, which came after the country was hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami, showed that the risks are simply too high. Before the disaster, nuclear power supplied a third of Japan's electricity. Al Jazeera's Mike Firn, reporting from a nuclear plant at Oi, takes a closer look at the debate on nuclear power.

India commissions nuclear submarine INS Chakra-NewsX

India today inducted the Russian-origin nuclear-powered submarine 'Nerpa' into the Navy, joining the elite league of nations having such sophisticated warships. Defence Minister AK Antony formally commissioned the Akula II class Nerpa, rechristened 'INS Chakra', into the Navy at the Ship Building Complex here. "INS Chakra will ensure security and sovereignty of the country," Antony said after commissioning the vessel. India has earlier leased and operated a Charlie Class Russian nuclear submarine from 1988 for training its personnel on such warships. With the induction of INS Chakra, India has joined the elite group of nations with nuclear-power submarines after a gap of two decades. With INS Chakra and the indigenous INS Arihant expected to start operational patrols soon, India will soon have two nuclear submarines guarding its vast maritime boundaries. 'Iran is already a nuclear power'

The US and Britain are warning Israel not to attack Iran's nuclear facilities... saying new sanctions need time to work. Tehran, currently being visited by UN inspectors, denies accusations it's developing atomic weapons. But Israel -- which also accuses Tehran of attacking its diplomats abroad -- could now be on an unstoppable path to a military strike.
