Extreme Solar Flares

Watch this and other space videos at SpaceRip.com From NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio. Solar flares may seem like far-away events, but they can damage satellites and even ground-based technologies and power grids. Every 11 years, as the sun reaches its maximum activity they become bigger and more common, and that increases the chances that one will significantly affect Earth. So what are these solar eruptions? A solar flare is basically an explosion on the surface of the sun ranging from minutes to hours in length. Large flares can release enough energy to power the entire United States for a million years. Flares happen when the powerful magnetic fields in and around the sun reconnect. They're usually associated with active regions, often seen as sunspots, where the magnetic fields are strongest. Flares are classified according to their strength. The smallest ones are B-class, followed by C, M and X, the largest. Similar to the Richter scale for earthquakes, each letter represents a ten-fold increase in energy output. So an X is 10 times an M and 100 times a C. Within each letter class, there is a finer scale from 1 to 9. C-class flares are too weak to noticeably affect Earth. M-class flares can cause brief radio blackouts at the poles and minor radiation storms that might endanger astronauts. It's the X-class flares that are the real juggernauts. Although X is the last letter, there are flares more than 10 times the power of an X1, so X-class flares can go ...

NASA | Massive Solar Flare gets HD Close Up

Take a closer look at the flare that erupted on March 6, 2012. This movie of the March 6, 2012 X5.4 flare was captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in the 171 and 131 Angstrom wavelength. One of the most dramatic features is the way the entire surface of the sun seems to ripple with the force of the eruption. This movement comes from something called EIT waves -- because they were first discovered with the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) on the Solar Heliospheric Observatory. Since SDO captures images every 12 seconds, it has been able to map the full evolution of these waves and confirm that they can travel across the full breadth of the sun. The waves move at over a million miles per hour, zipping from one side of the sun to the other in about an hour. The movie shows two distinct waves. The first seems to spread in all directions; the second is narrower, moving toward the southeast. Such waves are associated with, and perhaps trigger, fast coronal mass ejections, so it is likely that each one is connected to one of the two CMEs that erupted on March 6. X1.1 Solar Flare + CME / Solar Watch March 5, 2012

X-FLARE !! Solar activity is now high. Big Active Region 11429, which emerged on March 2nd, is crackling with strong flares. The strongest so far, an X1-class eruption, occured just ths morning, March 5th at 0413 UT. The explosion also hurled a bright coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. The expanding cloud will probably deliver a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on March 7th. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras in the nights ahead. Major X5.4 Solar Flare March 7, 2012

Major X 5.4 Solar Flare !! The second strongest solar flare of Solar Cycle 24 and the Second X-Flare from Active Region 11429. This major event measured X 5.4 at 00:24 UTC and triggered a strong R3 Level Radio Blackout. A coronal mass ejection was captured shortly after and is likely to be headed earths way. more information shortly. The expected CME from March 4 has impacted the earths magnetic field moments ago, causing the Bz component of the IMP to deviated sharply southward to - 18 nT. Geomagnetic storm should result in the next 3-4 hours. this X-Flare was predicted in this video below www.youtube.com Earthquake Forecasting Channel youtube.com Earthquake Reporting Channel www.youtube.com solarwatcher website solarwatcher.net Soho Website http Solar Soft website www.lmsal.com WSA-Enlil Solar Wind Prediction www.swpc.noaa.gov Helioviewer www.helioviewer.org Quality Solar Website www.solarham.com Estimated Planetary K index information http GOES Xray Flux Data www.swpc.noaa.gov Sunspot Information from Solar Monitor www.solarmonitor.org Quality Weather Website www.westernpacificweather.com Space Weather Website http Music used is Swords And Claws by Soundcritters
