Brief Introduction Solar Thermal and Solar Hot Water

Introduction slides to solar thermal energy and solar hot water for a home or business. Solar hot water can save you or your business potentially thousands of dollars per year as well as have a great return on investment within 3 to 5 years. With rising electricity costs, solar hot water makes more economical sense.

Australia's Energy Security - 24/7 Concentrated Solar Thermal Power plus Molten Salt Storage (CSP+)

PLEASE SHARE THIS VIDEO. Very few Australians are aware of molten salt storage technology and how it allows us to switch to 100% renewable energy in a very short space of time. Russell Beard of Earthrise goes on a tour of Gemasolar, near Seville, Spain - the first Concentrated Solar Thermal Power with molten salt storage (CSP+) plant to produce energy 24 hours per day. This power tower plant produces 20MW, enough to power 25000 homes but much bigger CSP+ plants are now being in the Middle East and the US that will produce 100MW and 150MW. Even larger CSP+ plants are possible. Research by Beyond Zero Emissions (www.beyondzeroemissions.org) and the Energy Research Institute, Melbourne University shows that a combination of * energy efficiency and an upgraded grid plus a mix of: * 60% CSP+ (comprising 12 solar regions each containing 19 220MW plants located in the high-insolation vicinities of Carnarvon, Kalgoorlie (WA), Port Augusta (SA), Mildura (VIC), Bourke, Dubbo, Moree, Silverton (NSW), Roma, Longreach, Charleville, Prairie (QLD)) and * 40% wind (comprising 23 wind regions in Albany, Bunbury, Esperance, Geraldton (WA), Cape Jaffa, Ceduna, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, Streaky Bay, Yongala (SA), Cooma, Crookwell, Orange, Silverton, Walcha (NSW), Ballarat, Mt Gellibrand, Port Fairy, Wonthaggi (VIC), Atherton, Collinsville, Georgetown, Stanthorpe (QLD)) and * a small hydro/biomass backup for a few days in winter can provide all of Australia's energy needs including those of ...

Solar Energy - Parts for solar thermal/hot water system (Enerworks)

This is part 2 of a tour with detailed explanation of a residential solar thermal/solar hot water heater system. Here I do into detail on various parts/components including the controller, temperature sensors, expansion tanks, flow meter, bypass valve assembly and stagnation control methods like vacation bypass valves, heat dump radiator, and covering the collector with a tarp. The system is the Enerworks one. It's installed in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, so cold climate issues apply. The solar panels or collectors are flat plate type. The solar tank and the natural gas backup tank are shown, as well as the heat exchanger and all piping. How the solar energy from the sun heats the absorber in the collector and then the food grade propylene glycol (antifreeze) and water mix is also covered. For more on solar thermal/solar hot water heating systems, see: rimstar.org - rimstar.org

DIY Solar Thermal Project for under $100

This is a DIY (do it yourself) solar thermal panel that made hot water for a farm. I built all components with my friend using all parts from Lowes/Home Depot/local hardware stores. Each challenge was to make the solar thermal panels under $100, which we successfully did for each panel. All components can be bought from stores, nothing was special order or special parts. After hooking up the system for the summer of 2011, the system performed very well and actually produced 170 degree F water. The hot water was kept in a Rubbermaid bucket, but the plastic was so cheap that the hot water from the panel melted the Rubbermaid bucket you see in the one of the pictures. I created a thermosiphon, which means that I did not use any electric pumps to move the hot water. The flow rate is about 1 gallon per minute to 1.5 gallons per minute (GPM) when measured inside of the hot water tubing. There are no tubes inside the barrel. I used hose connectors through the side of the barrel with silicone glue. They are like garden hose valves/connectors that you can find in Lowes/Home Depot. I am using CPVC because garden hose and regular PVC melt at the high temperatures. I was getting 190 degree F temperatures in February with this configuration. Below 55 F, the unit is still producing hot water at 150 F or higher. Also, I would recommend that you have a drainback system for during the day so that if you are using straight water it does not freeze or burst your piping. If you are trying ...

Solar Thermal : How it works-video

www.tecg.co.uk Video Transcription below Solar thermal heating systems harvest solar energy through a collector which absorbs energy from the sun, this energy is transferred into heat in a glycole solution that flows through heat in the collector and the heat is then transferred to the water which is stored in a conventiona hot water system. Our German manufactured solar thermal systems are designed to deliver up to 90% of your hot water heating demand when little space heating is required, and can provide at least 40-60% of all your hot water requirements throughout the year. Over 70% of the average household's energy use goes into space and water heating, so a free source of hot water can make a dramatic financial saving. A solar thermal water heating system consists of three main parts: now lets take a look at the process step by step. An evacuated solar collector is fitted to the roof to absorb the sun's heat and transfer it to the fluid in the solar circuit pipes. The solar circuit transports the hot fluid from the collectors to the hot water cylinder, the hot water cylinder receives the hot fluid and transfers the heat to the domestic hot water supply. Of the many benefits resulting from the installation of a solar thermal hot water heating system, the three biggest ones are as follows: 1. An immediate saving on hot water bills 2. The extended life of your boiler by up to 60%, having reduced the amount of heavy work required to heat your hot water 3. Long term ...

Renewable Energy: Solar Thermal Stirling Engine

NMSU Professor Thomas Jenkins shows how a solar thermal Stirling engine works. It takes a difference in air temperature to run the motor. Here, the engine essentially converts the sun's heat energy into mechanical energy, which in turn can be used to produce electricity.

What is the difference between Solar Thermal and Solar Photovoltaic Energy Systems ?

What is the difference between Solar Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal. Solar Energy systems using solar photovoltaic technology works by collecting light and converting the light into solar energy electricity. Solar energy panels are used and there are differing qualities in the design of Solar Photovoltaic cells. The solar energy photovoltaic cells are made up of minute silicon crystals attached and laid on a medium which is then called a wafer. These wafers are mounted and strung together to make up the main solar energy panel. The electricity that is produced from the panel system is DC and has to converted to AC to enable the Solar Energy to be used in the home or sent into the National grid system. A generation meter is installed so that the solar energy produced can be logged and the Feed in Tariff can be calculated. Solar Energy systems using Solar Thermal technology works by collecting light and converting the light into solar energy heat. Solar energy thermal Panels are used and there are a number of different types of solar thermal panels. The heat from the simple solar energy systems is either very hot on a hot day in June to not working at all when light level s are low and it is cold outside.
