US Senate approves Iran sanctions

On Monday The US Senate unanimously approved a package of new economic sanctions on Iran's oil sector just days ahead of a meeting in Baghdad between major world powers and Tehran. The House of Representatives passed its version of the bill in December and now the Senate and House must work out their differences in the legislation. The West suspects Iran is working to build a nuclear bomb and the sanctions are meant to strip Tehran of revenue by shutting down financial deals with Iran's powerful state oil and tanker enterprises. Iran has said its nuclear program is for civilian purposes. In a statement from Republican Senator Mark Kirk, a co-author of the bill, he states that the Senate put Iranian leaders on notice that they must halt all uranium enrichment activities or face another round of economic sanctions from the United States.

US levies Iran and Syria technology sanctions

President Barack Obama has signed an executive order introducing sanctions on people and entities in Syria and Iran, that use technology to target their citizens and perpetrate human rights abuses. The move underscored the degree to which technology, from mobile phones to social media, has not only fuelled popular uprisings in countries throughout the Arab world, but also given governments new ways to track and suppress political dissent. Alan Fisher reports from Washington.

Harsh on Iran: 'Sanctions disgusting, hit ordinary people'

The European Union has expanded its sanctions against Iran, freezing assets and adding more officials to a visa blacklist. It cites 'serious human rights violations' for the measures - which follow other similar penalties over the Islamic republic's nuclear programme. The US has just drawn up a list of countries which are to be cut-off from the American financial system - if they don't reduce Iranian oil imports within 6 months. Meanwhile, Israel says its threat of a military strike on Iran is stopping it from building a suspected nuclear bomb. Tehran maintains its atomic programme is for peaceful energy purposes only. But the US is against an imminent attack on the Islamic state - believing it would drag the whole region into war.
