Flattening ('lapping") a coticule

When you get your coticule stone, it helps to give it a one-time flattening. Write atop it with pencil, and then use either a 'lapping plate' (such as what we sell, DMT DuoSharp or DiaSharp) or just some coarse wet/dry sandpaper on counter to remove the pencil from the wet stone. Use your flattening medium to slightly round the sides of the coticule (aka 'chamfering'). After you do this, help take off the sandpaper-y feel by using your stone with kitchen knives; flattening and smoothing the top of your coticule helps improve the coticule's subjective feel and 'communication' for most users, and is a good investment of your time at least once. Even with sandpaper, it shoudn't be a rough battle.

FraGmenTd - Nowhere To Run

OPEN ME Started with just me screwing around with 3xOsc and coming up with the sandpapery synth riff, and then the whole thing just got out of hand. At first I was using standard drum samples, but for a while now I've been needing some better acoustic kits to work with. Native Instruments had a 50% off sale on their Studio Drummer pack for Kontact, and I just couldn't pass it up. I'd been considering XLN Addictive Drums, and Toontrack's ezDrummer, but both were considerably more expensive, and Studio Drummer was more than adequate. I'd been wanting them for my rock projects, but if acoustic drums are good enough for the Propellerheads' electronic music, they should be good enough for me! Also decided to try something different with the lead synth I normally use, which I usually run through FL's generic distortion plugin. Instead I ran it through the same plugin stack I use for recording my guitar. Heh... my computer was somewhat uncooperative with playing a synth through a Mesa Rectifier head with a combined Mesa/Marshall 4x12, but I liked the sound, and I might just keep doing it that way. Line breaks, but I manage to land the huge Snook anyway!

I grabbed the line so I could lip him (guess at the time that seemed better than netting), but he thrashes and breaks it. Somehow I managed to grab him right out of the water! He was hooked in the back of his mouth, so during the fight the 25-lb-test flouro line frayed against his sandpaper-y teeth. He wasn't hurt from the hooking or landing, and swam away easily. 29.5 inches.

PRESENTED BY TOM MILLET CHICAGO MAG (07) ): The talented Mr. May is an Australian analog to Ron Sexsmith. May's songs are direct and to the point and highlight his achingly wonderful voice. There are bits here that remind me of Jeff Buckley, Neil Finn and Ronnie Lane, too. This is pretty good company to mentioned in, and May is quite deserving of such lofty praise. The Sexsmith comparison comes through very strongly on "Sad Is Somehow Beautiful". It's just obvious in the gentle, flowing melodies. The song has two primary melodies that compliment each other perfectly. This song radiates tenderness and empathy. May's slightly sandpapery voice is perfect on the loping "Two Hours a Day", which comes closer to Crowded House/Squeeze territory. This song has an instantly memorable chorus, as he sings about a woman who has spent "five long years in a cocktail dress/two hours a day trying to look your best." Let's just say her life hasn't turned out quite the way she would have liked. That track features the drumming of the late Paul Hester of Crowded House, who also provides a strong contribution to the 'rockingest' number on the record, "The Fever". The track contrasts a slinky rhythm with a little burst of floating melodic guitar. While the full band tracks are all terrific, on songs like "You Know It's Over" and "St. Patrick's Eyes", spare accompaniment spotlights May's vocals to great advantage (though on the latter, the band does come in to add a bit of drive).
