| (Audio only) Portugal's Carlos Paião had already sung "Playback" at Eurovision in 1981 to little renown. For his 1985 World Popular Song Festival entry, he chose a far more typically Portuguese tune, the emotional "Lá longe senhora". Actually, the tropical feel makes it sound more Brazilian (which makes since, as historically the Brazilians had better luck at the festival than the Portuguese). It was all for nought, unfortunately, as this song didn't make it beyond the semi-final. The song was later covered by fado singer Dulce Guiramães. In 1988, Carlos tragically died in a fatal car crash. |
