Mold making basics: Silicone Block Mold

Block mold explanation. This is the most basic mold method for silicone rubber. This is a good method when speed is more important than overall cost. We used 73-45 platinum silicone for this particular mold. A cut block mold like this works best with rubber that is shore A20 or higher. This means a medium rubber. Soft rubber such as Gel-10 would be too soft and would distort at the seams.

Silicone Mold Making with 71-11

Making a mold under pressure to eliminate air bubbles. This technique may be used on some low viscosity silicones when pressure casting will be done in the mold. 71-11 is a low viscosity silicone with high tear strength with a Shore A value of 15.

Making a Brush-On Silicone Mold | Mold Making Tutorials, Part 1/2

www.smooth-on.com for more information about Smooth-On silicone rubbers. Making a Brush-On Mold with Rebound 25 Liquid Silicone Rubber (Part 1 of 2) For this demonstration we are going to use a small plastic model. Step One: Secure Model to Baseboard Hot-melt glue is used to secure model to baseboard. Step Two: Measure and Mix Rebound 25 Silicone Rubber Measure equal amounts of Part A and Part B. Combine Parts A and B into a mixing container. Parts A and B are mixed thorougly for at least 3 minutes. No color streaks indicates liquid rubber material is well mixed. Step Three: Apply First Layer "Detail Coat" A thin first layer ensures minimal bubble entrapment in the finished mold. Use brush to work rubber into fine detail. Do not over-apply rubber. Create rubber flange: cover baseboard at least 3 inches (7.6 cm) out from the base of model. Ensure thorough coverage: check model carefully for missed areas. Mix and apply more rubber if necessary. Let the first coat cure for a about 60 minutes at room temperature until tacky. Tacky = Sticky to the touch by does not come off onto glove. Mold Maker's Tip Touch rubber off model. If rubber comes off onto your glove, it is not ready for the next layer. Rubber is tacky and ready to receive next layer of rubber. Step Four: More material is measured and mixed for the second, thicker coat Dispense equal amounts of Parts A and B. Mix thoroughly for 3 minutes. No color streaks indicates material is well mixed. Step 5: Apply Second Layer ...

Mold Making Minute: 2-Part Mold Star® 15 Mold

www.smooth-on.com for more mold making and casting videos, galleries, and materials. Mold Making Minute: 2-Part Mold Making The original model is a plastic sphere. The 2-part mold should be split along the horizontal axis. Process Overview 1: One half of model is embedded in clay 2: The first half of the mold is poured and allowed to fully cure 3: The mold is turned over and clay is removed 4: Release agent is sprayed to prevent bonding 5: The second half of the mold is poured The mold is allowed to fully cure prior to demolding. Making the First Half Build a mold box. Seal seams with hot glue. Secure with a mold strap. The model must first be partially embedded in clay. Begin by building a clay bed inside the box. Press the model into the clay bed until only the top half is exposed. Use more clay to fill in any open spaces. Level the clay surface to the model's midpoint. Flatten and smooth the clay surface. Embed small acorn nuts in the clay; reason: creates registration keys between mold halves. Mold Star 15 1:1 Low Viscosity Platinum Silicone Dispense equal amounts 1A:1B by volume. Dispense parts A and B into mixing container. Mix parts A and B as directed. Slowly pour into one corner of the mold box. Pour 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) over model's high point. Allow Mold Star 15 to cure. Making the Second Half Begin by removing the mold box. Turn the mold over and remove the clay. Do not remove the model from the mold. Carefully remove the acorn nuts without removing the model ...

Mold Making Video - Silicone Plastique Basic Mold Making - Learn How to Use This Amazing Mold Putty

Here is a helpful mold making video created by www.MakeYourOwnMolds.com that teaches basic mold making techniques using an amazing mold putty called, Silicone Plastique. Mold making is a valuable skill that can be very useful for just about anyone who is involved in creating a physical object. I have taught thousands of people how to make molds and have come to realize that most people have a predetermined opinion that mold making is very technical and difficult to perform. It is true that mold making can be very complex, but you may be surprised to find that 90% of the physical objects around you right now can be molded with Silicone Plastique. The reason this is possible is because I have spent a decade and a half developing this amazing mold putty into a perfect consistency that feels like modeling clay and is very user friendly. Originally designed for chefs to be used in kitchens for food molds, Silicone Plastique is completely non-toxic, food grade and complies with FDA regulations concerning synthetic rubber coming into repeated contact with food. While chefs world wide use Silicone Plastique, it is amazing how this easy to use silicone mold making compound has found its way into many diverse areas. Scientist and engineers purchase Silicone Plastique in order to make molds of their inventions so they can have a collection of duplicate prototypes. Paleontologists use it to make molds of fossils right at the dig sight and in museum work shops. Restoration experts use ...
