SketchUp Tips and Tricks: Image, Texture, Matched Photo Import Options

When you import textures in Google SketchUp, you will have three options. Use as Image. Use as Texture. and Use as Matched Photo. The Use as Image option will import image as if it were a billboard. The Use as Texture option will import the image as a repeating texture, like wrapping paper. If you select the Matched Photo option, you will automatically be taken to the Match Photo interface, where you can align perspective lines to create a 3d model from the image.

SketchUp Tips and Tricks: A Good Reason to Color Segments "By Axes"

Connecting coplanar segments will automatically create a surface in Google SketchUp... but you may run into a situation where a face doesn't materialize where it looks like it should. This is usually because segments are not coplanar. In some situations setting your segment color to "by axes" from the Styles manager can help identify non-planar segments.

SketchUp Tips and Tricks: Automatic and Encouraged Inferencing

The inference engine is very powerful in Google Sketchup. It cannot be turned off. So it is a good idea to be aware when something is being inferred or referenced. Whenever you see a pop-up tip, a colored line, or a colored point, that is SketchUp's inference engine at work. SketchUp will automatically infer to the last five points drawn, but you can encourage inferences simply by hovering over a geomerty. You can also reference the center of an arc or circle by hovering over its edge.

SketchUp Tips and Tricks: Geometry Stickyness, Groups, and Components

Geometries in Google SketchUp are sticky. If geometries such as faces or segments touch exactly, they will fuse or stick together. If you don't want geometries to stick to one another, you can make them either a group or component by right-clicking and selecting make group or make component. Grouping just creates a shell that holds and protect geometries. Components are instances that you can re-use. You can double click on a group or component to edit it. Changing one component will change all instances of that component.

SketchUp Tips and Tricks: Perspective vs. Parallel Projection

In Google SketchUp, you can model in either perspective mode or parallel projection. Both have their benefits. For instance if you need to model in a really narrow or enclosed space, you can adjust your field of view to a high number like sixty. If you are working with layers of information that you would like to align, turning on parallel projection can be handy. Here I will draw some geometries on a flat plane positioned precisely above my topography. Once that is done, I will use the drape sandbox tool to drape the lines onto this surface.

SketchUp Tips and Tricks: Organizing with Nested Components and The Outliner

Component and groups are a great way to keep your Google SketchUp models organized. They can be edited by double clicking on them. A dashed line indicates that you are in a group or component "edit mode". Clicking in model space will exit out of the component edit. The outliner is a great tool to help you visualize your nested groups and components. You can easily edit a nested component by double clicking on its name. You can even un-nest a component by dragging its name.

SketchUp Tips and Tricks: Making Copies with the Move tool

The Move tool is actually a Move/Copy tool. Press the control key (option on a Mac) before or after the move is started to create a copy. After the copy is placed, you can type a number followed by "x" and enter to make copies. Typing a number and a forward slash will divide copies between the original and the first copy. You can experiment with different numbers until another drawing tool is selected.

SketchUp Tips and Tricks: Pre-Select vs. Active Select

If a geometry, group, or component is pre selected in Google SketchUp with the select tool and then another tool is grabbed, that tool will only work on that current selection. Pre-selecting is useful when doing precision moves. You can de-select a selection by clicking in the model space with the select tool. If nothing is pre-selected, the tool you grab will actively select things that are below its icon. This is useful for moving points as they cannot be individually pre-selected.

SketchUp Tips and Tricks: Intuitive Mouse Navigation

Navigating in Google SketchUp is intuitive and easy with a two button mouse with a scroll wheel. At any time, scrolling will zoom in or out. It is important to note that the center of the zoom is where your cursor is at. Pressing and holding the scroll wheel, or middle button, will allow you to orbit your 3D view. It doesn't matter which tool is currently selected. You can even start a push-pull with a click, orbit, zoom in and out, and click once more to finish the push pull. You can pan by pressing the middle button and the left button at the same time.
