Artificial Sweeteners

Warning: Long, science-heavy video. No funny cats or guys getting hit in the nuts. Artificial sweeteners, or as they are usually referred to in the literature "non-caloric" sweeteners or "high-intensity" sweeteners, address the problem of sugar calorie excess in our diet. They've been demonstrated to support weight loss or maintenance, reduce cavities and can be part of a healthy lifestyle. Much focus has been on CSPI report: www.cspinet.org I disagree with CSPI on about 25% of their rankings, but I appreciate that they take a very conservative stance. Citations: Aspartame: 1. How to Make Apple Syrup Sweetener - VR to Goat Hollow

I accepted Goat Hollow's challenge to show how I would make/produce a product that I've typically relied on someone else for, in this case sugar. If there were a long-term scenario, of many years, I would eventually run out of sugar. What would I do then. I'd my make own sweetener, in this case apple syrup. The syrup is delicious and a powerful sweetener. It looks a lot like honey. There even a company that sells apple syrup and they call their product 'Bee Free Honey' and they market heavily to vegans. Apple syrup is also called 'boiled cider'. I was used in colonial times as a very common sweetener. It fell out of fashion in the 1940's when cane syrup, which was much less expensive appeared on the market. We consumer copious amounts of sugar, but you might be alarmed if you knew at what price. The sugar business is an ugly one. If you have the stomach for it, check out "The Price of Sugar", a film detailing the heartbreaking plight of the some of the world's poorest people, displaced Haitians who work the cane fields of the Dominican Republic. The Price of Sugar: www.imdb.com ------------------------------------------------------ Apple Syrup Recipe: Boil 64 ounces of unsweetened apple juice in a large pot, for approximately 1 1/2 hours. Pour into a hot jar. Let cool. If it's too thick for your liking, add a little boiling water and stir. Store in refrigerator if available. Makes approximately 1/2 pint of syrup. *Note - pears and grapes juice can be use as well ...
