Stare polskie tango: 'Jesienna piosenka'

Autumn with her cold and misty days arrived in my country so early (still in Summer, Sept.14...) this year and this fact made me reach for a tango with autumn air -- "Autumn song", the title. Tango composed and written by Jakub Kagan and Michał Tyszkiewicz and recorded by Hanka Ordonówna in 1934. A count, Michał Tyszkiewicz, husband (young and handsome...)of the star turned out to be brilliant lyricist and had written for his great wife many a text which became later her great hits.

Stare polskie tango: 'Już nigdy !' - Sława Przybylska

Tango 'Już nigdy' (Never more/Never again) was first sung by Vera Bobrowska a star of the cabaret Morskie Oko, Warsaw, 1930 and became such a success that through decades a lot of singers used to include it to their repertoire again and again. But it was not until 1958 when a young at that time and very ambitious girl, Sława Przybylska, ventured to present it on the radio and on her first record. The song acquired a new light. "This is our last Sunday, today we shall say goodbye, today we shall separate for all times. This is our last Sunday, so share these moments with me, look more tenderly at me, this very last time." ..................................................... "Este es el último domingo, hoy nos alejaremos, hoy cada uno tomará su camino, para el resto de nuestra vida. Este es el último domingo, Entonces no me lo retacees, mírame tiernamente, porque es la última vez." Jerzy Petersburski, composer of Polish pop standards became popular in many countries due to his fantastic musical 'output' as well as extremely haunting and beautiful refrains of songs he had composed, mainly tangos. In mid 30's, I think he was clever enough to have noticed how great popularity "Szomorú Vasárnap" (Gloomy Sunday), the Hungarian 'suicide song' was gaining. He decided to write his own 'last Sunday' and probably had no idea at that time what a success was in store for that tango. The print of the Polish sheet music from 1936 (year of composing), being in my possession, is denoted as '8th edition' ! With passing years, the legend of the 'suicide Hungarian song' began slowly affect -- unjustly -- history of our tango. Polish "This Is Our Last Sunday" is about parting with the beloved person who "is a winner in that game" and is going to have -- from that moment on -- happy and bright days. Unique unity of the melody and words was attracting listeners for years and made this number to be a Polish evergreen ...
