Kinect Enabled Personal Robot

This video shows a GeckoSystems' Carebot(tm), equipped with a pair of Microsoft Kinect sensors, navigating through a narrow passageway cluttered with various obstacles. This represents the worst case for in-home navigation. Kinect processing is handled by a piece of software called GeckoImager, running on a dual core 1.66GHz Intel Atom motherboard. The navigation is handled by two other GeckoSavants(tm), GeckoNav and GeckoSuper, running on a separate dual core Atom machine. Both computers were located on the robot during the video.

The social side of personal robots

Robotics Institute Seminar Guest speaker: Cynthia Breazeal Associate Professor, Media Arts and Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology March 18, 2011 Abstract The emerging field of Human-Robot Interaction is undergoing rapid growth, motivated by important societal challenges facing the general public. In this talk, I highlight a number of provocative research findings that illuminate the social attributes of personal robots. This new "breed" of social robot interacts with people in an interpersonal way, more as a partner rather than as a tool, and opens new applications for socially intelligent machines in the future. I illustrate these possibilities by highlighting a number of research projects from my group at the MIT Media Lab. An important goal of this work is to use socially interactive robots as a scientific tool to understand human behavior, to design machines that can engage us on social and emotional levels as well as learn from people, and to use these insights to create robotic technologies that can enhance human performance and quality of life with specific applications in healthcare, education, entertainment, and telecommunication. Speaker Biography Dr. Cynthia Breazeal is an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she founded and directs the Personal Robots Group at the Media Lab. Speaker: Steve Cousins, Willow Garage Steve demonstrates Willow Garage's PR2 robot, a $400K general-purpose robot-on-wheels that can be programmed to perform customized tasks around the house or office, thanks to its open, "robot OS" architecture. While using a PR2 commercially for most day-to-day tasks is still cost prohibitive, it is useful as a platform for performing robot research, replacing many of the robots built by hand today for this purpose.
