Travis Pastrana sets record for Mt. Washington hillclimb

The 149-year-old Mt. Washington Auto Road has seen the likes of horses and carriages, camels, people, bicycles and most famously, competition race cars. On September 8th, Traveling at an average speed of nearly 72mph in a Vermont SportsCar prepared, BFGoodrich Tires-shod 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car, four-time Rally America National Champion Travis Pastrana made sure the project name, Red Bull Speed Chasers, lived up to its name. He reached the summit faster than anyone else in history by clocking an officially timed run of 6 minutes 20.47 seconds, besting the previous record by more than twenty seconds. "The entry of the new Scirocco in what is arguably the world's toughest automobile race is an equally demanding and exciting project," says Dr Ulrich Hackenberg. The member of the Volkswagen board for technical development announces the objective set for the commitment in the "Green Hell" as well: "Our goal should be for one of the three teams to repeat the Golf GTI's 2007 class victory. That would be an excellent way to support the market launch of the production model."

Porsche Wins Pikes Peak Hillclimb

Porsche Wins Again and Breaks Another Record. This time at the Pikes Peak Time Attack Class With a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and Breaking the Record by 38 Seconds -- Ahead of Every Production-based Car Entered. Jeff Zwart, from Woody Creek, Colorado, driving the specially-prepared Luminox Watch Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race car, has won and set a new record in the 2WD Time Attack class in Sunday's 88th running of the Pikes Peak Hillclimb. Zwart, now a seven-time Pikes Peak class winner, not only broke the 2009 class record by 38 seconds, but went faster than all but five of the entire field -- three Unlimited Class and two Open Wheels cars, all with 600-plus horsepower. His 911 GT3 Cup car also beat all the production based race car entries.

1970-72 OLDSMOBILE ADS: CUTLASS 442 DELTA 88 98 TORONADO VISTA CRUISER W30 RALLYE 350 HURST OLDS

1970-72 Oldsmobile Ads and brochure pages along with some factory photos, a couple of factory sponsored drag cars, and a few magazine photos from these years where you will notice the Michigan plates dated 70-72. As with our 64-69 Olds ad video I can now spot at least two ads that were mistakenly left out: A variant of the blue 71 Vista Cruiser and an alternate red 72 Cutlass S from Ebony magazine. Regretfully some ads or pictures are lost or overlooked in shuffle from the photography to the uploading. The closing shots shows John Beltz who was Oldsmobile's chief engineer in 1964 and one of the prime movers of the Toronado project. Beltz was promoted to Oldsmobile general manager in 1969 when Harold N. Metzel retired. Beltz passed away in 1972 from cancer. According to legend John Beltz and his staff led Oldsmobile through undoubtedly its best years and the Oldsmobiles from 1949 to 72 define Olds as the Rocket division of GM. Beltz is posing with some experimental Olds engines mostly different 455 versions that never saw production. Here are descriptions of these engines not neccesarily in the order of appearance: 1. The 0W-43 all aluminum 455 with 4 valve per cylinders, four overhead cam Weber engine. With a redline of just under 8500rpm it was originally conceived for CAN AM racing. At 3000rpm it put out 300hp and at 6000rpm registered over 600hp. The top output recorded for this engine in the Lansing dyno facility was 700 real hp at 6800rpm. Tests were run with both ...

Jet-fuelled Toyota Hilux conquers the Antarctic (Video Highlights)

Toyota Hilux, the first car ever to reach the Magnetic North Pole returns to take on one of the most hostile environments on Earth, the Antarctic. With temperatures as low as -50°C, a team of Toyota Hilux vehicles prepared by Arctic Trucks, set records as they trekked across the barren landscape. In a space of four months, the vehicles covered some 70000 km in the longest polar expedition on record. Three of the Hilux vehicles clocked in a world record 9500 km each during the arduous journey.
