Stanford Students Design Recyclable Laptop with Autodesk Inventor Software

A class of Stanford University graduate students have been honored as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for October for developing a prototype of the recyclable Bloom laptop. The Bloom is the project of a team of students from Stanford and Finland's Aalto University who were given the task to create a recyclable consumer electronics product that makes electronics recycling a simpler, more effective and engaging process for consumers. The students used Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Inventor Publisher software to help develop and refine the innovative laptop during the school year. Creating 3D digital prototypes of the hardware components inside the laptop aided in creating a readily accessible laptop design that is also easy to disassemble. When separated into different material types — such as plastics, metals and circuitry — the Bloom laptop's modular design makes it easy for consumers to decrease the amount of electronic waste added to landfills. For example, 1.9 to 2.2 million tons of electronics became obsolete in 2005, with only 345000 to 379000 tons being recycled. The Bloom can be disassembled in just two minutes, without tools and in just 10 steps. By comparison, a commercially available laptop takes about 45 minutes to disassemble, requires three separate tools and involves as many as 120 steps.

DESIGN SQUAD Contest Winner Brings Recyclable Shelter ...

www.pbskidsgo.org PBS KIDS GO!'s hit TV series Design Squad teamed up with the Intel Foundation to challenge kids across the country to enter the recycle-themed "Trash to Treasure" competition. Max Wallack, 12, won the Intel sponsored grand prize for his Home Dome invention, which is largely made from discarded plastic and provides temporary shelter to the homeless and displaced victims of natural disasters. Max spent a day at Continuum, a design and innovation consultancy building a full-scale version of the Home Dome with Continuum’s Richard Ciccarelli, director of their model shop and Design Squad host Nate Ball who helped collaborate with Max to take his idea of an easy-to-build and efficient shelter for the homeless to the next level. Borrowing from the hugely popular reality competition format, DESIGN SQUAD is aimed at kids and people of all ages who like reality or how-to television. Its goal is to get viewers excited about engineering! Over 13 episodes, eight high school contestants tackle engineering challenges for an actual client -- from building a machine that makes pancakes to a "summer sled" for LL Bean. In the final episode, the top two scorers battle for the Grand Prize-- a $10000 college scholarship from the Intel® Foundation. Check your local listings to find out when you can watch DESIGN SQUAD on your local PBS station. Robot Separates Recyclables from Other Garbage

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Follow us on Facebook ☛ facebook.com A Finnish waste management company is currently testing a robot that can identify recyclables among other garbage. This technology can help waste management companies cut down on costs and be more efficient. Helsinki-based ZenRobotics says its intelligent recycling robot correctly identified and sorted half of the recyclable material it was fed during tests at a construction site. The robot is able to identify metals, concrete, wood and certain types of plastics. [Harri Valpola, Chief Technology Officer, ZenRobotics]: "Currently waste is being sorted by all kinds of mechanical means, drums, screens and this kind of technology can not handle the type of waste the robots can do." The robot uses data from a combination of visual sensors, metal detectors, weight measurements and tactile feedback from a robotic arm to pick out pieces from a mound of debris and sort them. [Harri Valpola, Chief Technology Officer, ZenRobotics]: "Our robot has been built using standard industrial robots. There is nothing special in the robots themselves, the specialty is in the brain of the robot. Normally robots can not distinguish shapes and react differently for different kinds of shapes as this one." At the test site near Helsinki, where recycling and waste management company SITA manages construction waste, the robot is stationed by a conveyor belt where the materials are loaded. The ...
