NSA-under-fire_-Supreme-Court-to-review-Legality-of-Warrantless-Wiretapping-Spying-of-US-Citizens

NSA under fire: Supreme Court to review Legality of Warrantless Wiretapping/Spying of US Citizens Phone calls to Prague? Emails to Ecuador? The United States government can currently sift through any international communication that crosses outside of American territory, but all that might soon change. The US Supreme Court decided on Monday this week that they will consider a case that challenges the powers for the federal government established in the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, a legislation that allows authorities a wide breadth when getting away with snooping into private conversation in the name of national security. Although US President Barack Obama campaigned on changing FISA back in 2008, the law on the books right now is carrying over the authoritarian powers installed under the administration of his predecessor, President George W. Bush. As it stands right now, the National Security Agency is allowed unfettered access to listening in on the conversations of Americans as long as they extend over international borders. The American Civil Liberties Union has been trying to change that, however, and might finally be able to take that fight to the highest court in the land. The ACLU claims that Americans should be protected from government surveillance without warrant or reason; the White House, on the other hand, says the plaintiffs in the case should be able to prove that they are being watched before bringing this case to trial. The ACLU challenged FISA as soon ...

Warrantless wiretaps , email and web use - United Kingdom

Email and web use 'to be monitored' under new laws The government will be able to monitor the calls, emails, texts and website visits of everyone in the UK under new legislation set to be announced soon. Internet firms will be required to give intelligence agency GCHQ access to communications on demand, in real time. The Home Office says the move is key to tackling crime and terrorism, but civil liberties groups have criticised it. Tory MP David Davis called it "an unnecessary extension of the ability of the state to snoop on ordinary people". Attempts by the last Labour government to take similar steps failed after huge opposition, including from the Tories. 'Unprecedented step' A new law - which may be announced in the forthcoming Queen's Speech in May - would not allow GCHQ to access the content of emails, calls or messages without a warrant. But it would enable intelligence officers to identify who an individual or group is in contact with, how often and for how long. They would also be able to see which websites someone had visited. In a statement, the Home Office said action was needed to "maintain the continued availability of communications data as technology changes". "It is vital that police and security services are able to obtain communications data in certain circumstances to investigate serious crime and terrorism and to protect the public," a spokesman said. "As set out in the Strategic Defence and Security Review we will legislate as soon as parliamentary ...

Supreme Court OKs warrantless searches

As of Monday, the Supreme Court decided it was ok for cops to bust down your door if they hear a toilet flushing and claim it is on the grounds that they suspect you may be destroying evidence, specifically drugs. Our legal system is a complete failure.

CA Bill to End Warrantless Wiretapping

California legislature is fighting back on warrantless mobile device searches. They've passed SB 914, a bill that would require police to get a warrant before they go through an arrested person's mobile device. This legislation does still give law enforcement the ability to search through mobile devices during "emergency situations", which could be broadly interpreted, but it is a start. Governor Brown has until October 9th to decide if he's going to sign it or veto the bill and Wired is reporting rumors that he's going to veto the bill, showing his allegiance to the police.

Long Beach Warrantless Raid No. 27 of Medical Marijuana Collective (Robert Shannon)

Warrantless police raid of Long Beach, California (Los Angeles) Medical Marijuana Collective. Authorized by Robert (Bob) Shannon, this raid demonstrates the discrimination by the City of Long Beach and the Long Beach City Council against medical cannabis patients with cancer, AIDS, and serious disability. The Long Beach City Council, including councilwoman Gerrie Schipske, herself publically gay, attacks patients with cancer, AIDS and in wheelchairs. When she needed the help of the public and community, they were there for Ms. Schipske. Now, she votes for police action against medical cannabis patients -- she votes to have Bob Shannon unleash police without warrant to arrest patients. Nobody is arrested under state law -- because the medical marijuana collective operates under state law -- but he has them arrested under illegal ordinance 5.87. In October, 2011, the ordinance Shannon and his underlings, Erik Sund and Kendra Carney, were arresting people under was DETERMINED TO BE INVALID! Now, all of the charges have been dismissed -- except against those people Shannon wants to get. He hates patients -- even though he could have a family member eventually contract cancer or some other type of illness or disability, Shannon has declared war on patients. Police use a BATTERING RAM, ARREST PATIENTS, DETAIN PATIENTS, HARASS PATIENTS, and work against the California Compassionate Use Act and Medical Marijuana Program Act. Constant illegal and improper behavior in Long Beach ...
