Tales from the Arctic Circle. Episode One

Episode 1. Monday "building snowhouses" In Iqaluit a town 100 miles from the Arctic Circle the Inuit are building igloos for the Toonik Tyme festival. This is a booming capital city of seven thousand people but there is a serious housing crisis. When temperatures drop down to minus 70 in the winter some families can be found living in sheds, but no one lives in igloos anymore. Episode One of 4 short films, commissioned by Channel 4 television, follow a week at the Toonik Tyme festival in Iqaluit, the Inuit capital way up in the Arctic. A magical look at a changing culture as locals compete in games and tests of skill: igloo building, ice sculpture, snowmobile racing and a round of golf on a fairway carved from the sea ice. Its all so enchanting, but behind these images are stories of homelessness, melting ice, colonialism and isolation.

ICELAND: Cruising Inside the Arctic Circle

Recorded September 4, 2008. This video commemorates my becoming a member of the most honourable Order of Bluenoses when while on board the mv Sea Princess crossed the Artic Circle Latitude 66 33.0 North on passage from Torshavn to Akureyri on Thursday, 4th September 2008 at 2100 hours. Following the crossing of the Artic Circle on September 5th as we were leaving Akureyri there was a polar bear plunge in the ship's swimming pool. From: timvp.com

Cold water coral in the Arctic Circle

Time-lapse video of animals around cold-water coral reefs within the Arctic Circle - Northern Norway. Animals are attracted into the field of view by mackerel bait and a photo is taken every minute. Here we are viewing 5 photos a second, so each second represents 5 minutes on the seabed. This was a shorter deployment as the cold water reduced the battery life (we had snow and ice on deck!) This was taken by the Biogenic Reef Ichthyofauna Lander (BRIL) owned and operated by the University of Aberdeen's Oceanlab® for the CoralFISH project.

Lean Times in the Arctic Circle

onearth.org Importing food all the way to Kotzebue, Alaska, isn't exactly cheap. So the locals eat local, consuming everything from seals and moose to whales and Arctic cod. But as temperatures warm, threatening those same animals, people living in Arctic regions are losing their traditional food sources. Made in Germany | Goldmining on the Artic Circle

Man has always been fascinated by gold. Fear of inflation and unstable financial markets has triggered increased demand and goldmining is a more lucrative business than ever. The Arctic Circle region is no exception. The main goldmining company is Boliden, a Swedish firm with mines in Sweden, Finland and Ireland. Gold was first discovered in the Swedish town of Skelleftea in the 1920s, and today is home to one of the biggest smelting plants in the world. We spent a day with workers to find out how gold is mined. We also find out how Boliden is holding out against competition in Canada, South Africa ,the US and Australia.

Midnight Sun from the Arctic Circle in Sweden

This is a video taken on the longest day of the year, just above the Arctic Circle, so the sun never really set. At midnight the sun just dipped below the mountains and then started coming right back up.
