Riz Khan - Expelling the Roma

France claims that its illegal Roma communities (often called gypsies or travellers) are a serious threat to social order. Nicolas Sarkozy ordered the dismantling of illegal camps of travelling people and Roma across France, as part of a "war" on crime and urban violence. Will Sarkozy's plan to deport the Roma actually serve the public interest, or is it an attempt to shift the focus off the country's political and economic challenges?

TEDxRainier - Rick Steves: The Value of Travel

After spending 4 months a year for the last 30 years living out of a suitcase, Rick Steves reflects on the value of thoughtful travel. Sharing lessons learned from Iran to El Salvador and from India to Denmark, Steves tells why spending all that time and money away from home has broadened his perspective, enriched his life, and made it clear to him, as he says in his talk, "Fear is for people who don't get out very much." In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Air France is extremely distraught and the whole team of Air France is suffering, Pierre Henri Gourgeon, the chief executive of Air France-KLM, told reporters in Paris. We would like to say to the relatives of the victims that we are totally with them and will make every effort to help them. President Nicolas Sarkozy of France said: Its a tragic accident. Differences between French in Quebec and France: accent, attitude & curse words

fi3m.com [Correction: She said that outside of Quebec they only speak English, which is of course forgetting about New Brunswick and many strong francophone communities. And also, Paris does not represent France. PLEASE stop saying these two things in comments, we get it] [UPDATE: That's it - I'm turning off the comments! Every single day someone posts exactly the same thing, which I've just referred to. It's tedious. Can't any of you people read?] My Couchsurfing guest Geneviève from Montréal and I were speaking in French during her visit in Amsterdam (I'm Irish by the way), so I decided to sit down down with her and talk with her about some differences and history behind Quebec French. We both agreed that there are some major problems in speaking with French people (although this was only my experience in Paris; the rest of France were much nicer to me), and she shared some of her other thoughts on travelling in Europe. I hope you enjoy the interview; it's been four years since I lived among Francophones, so hopefully my level of French hasn't gone down *too* much! It's with the help of Couchsurfing guests like Geneviève that I've maintained a workable level of French all these years

The Dordogne, France: Lascaux's Prehistoric Cave Paintings

From about 18000 to 10000 bc, long before Stonehenge and the pyramids, back when mammoths and saber-toothed cats still roamed the earth, prehistoric people painted deep inside caves in what is today the Dordogne region of France. These cave paintings are huge and sophisticated projects executed by artists and supported by an impressive culture — the Magdalenians. For more information on the Rick Steves' Europe TV series — including episode descriptions, scripts, participating stations, travel information on destinations and more — visit www.ricksteves.com.

Eiffel Tower - Paris, France

The Eiffel Tower was built to stand for just 20 years but has lured lovers and sightseers to her heights for more than 120 years! This beautiful tower was constructed for the 1889 Worlds Fair and at 324 metres high remained the tallest structure in the world until 1930. It is now the world's most visited man-made structure and it has been estimated that more than 200 million people have visited the tower - but it is anyone's guess how many proposals on bended knee have been made here!
