US Aircraft Carrier Fleet Evolution - The Greatest Navy "City of Steel" Fleet

An aircraft carrier is a warship designed with a primary mission of deploying and recovering aircraft, acting as a sea-going airbase. Aircraft carriers thus allow a naval force to project air power great distances without having to depend on local bases for staging aircraft operations. They have evolved from wooden vessels used to deploy a balloon into nuclear powered warships that carry dozens of fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Following the war, the scope of carrier operations continued to increase in size and importance. Supercarriers, typically displacing 75000 tonnes or greater, have become the pinnacle of carrier development. Most are powered by nuclear reactors and form the core of a fleet designed to operate far from home. Amphibious assault ships, such as USS Tarawa or HMS Ocean, serve the purpose of carrying and landing Marines and operate a large contingent of helicopters for that purpose. Also known as "commando carriers" or "helicopter carriers", they have a secondary capability to operate VSTOL aircraft. Lacking the firepower of other warships, carriers by themselves are considered vulnerable to attack by other ships, aircraft, submarines or missiles and therefore travel as part of a carrier battle group (CVBG) for their protection. Unlike other types of capital ships in the 20th century, aircraft carrier designs since World War II have been effectively unlimited by any consideration save budgetary, and the ships have increased in size to handle the larger ...

US aircraft carriers to deliver 'direct message to Iran'

Europe and the US have expressed their willingness to return to talks with Iran over its controversial nuclear program. But despite that, the EU is seemingly still set to approve an embargo on Iranian oil. France even says the time to avoid military intervention is running out. As for the US, this week it strengthened its presence in the region by sending a second aircraft carrier to the Arabian sea. It's reportedly planning to sail through the Strait of Hormuz which Iran has threatened to block in response to sanctions. The Strait is a strategic waterway which the majority of oil exports from the Gulf to the West pass through. RT discusses the situation around Iran and possible ways out of the crisis with author Michael Winter from Boston. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

US Aircraft Carrier USS George Washington Sails into Hong Kong Waters

For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt To Hong Kong where a US Navy aircraft carrier is making it's regular visit to the island. We got a closer look at life inside the Japan-based aircraft carrier USS George Washington, that operates like a small city. Here's more. The United States Navy's Japan-based aircraft carrier USS George Washington has sailed into Hong Kong waters today for a routine visit. The 97000-ton nuclear-powered carrier based in the Japanese town of Yokosuka brought with it the George Washington Carrier Strike Group and the Carrier Air Wing 5 to the ex-British colony. The ship from the US 7th fleet makes an average of 40 visits to the ex-British colony every year, according to an official press release. One navigator says he enjoys his time on George Washington. [Morris Ng, United States Navy Navigator]: "You get to hit a lot more ports. And you don't get sea-sick on a carrier, that's a good thing. Because when I was on a DDG (Destroyer), you get a lot of sea-sick. And yeah, you get to see the world." Operating like a small city, the ship also carries with it many crew members who are responsible for a variety of services. [David Yip, Ship's Post Office Worker]: "It's a pretty good experience. I work at the post office. So I just deliver mail to people -- 5000, 6000 people on the ship. It's pretty busy! Thousands, hundreds of thousands pounds of mail everyday." The navy said, apart from George ...

Aircraft Carrier History: "Attack Carriers from Langley to Enterprise" pt1-2 1969 US Navy

Seaplane tender support ships came next; in September 1914, the Imperial Japanese Navy Wakamiya conducted the world's first successful naval-launched air raids. It lowered four Maurice Farman seaplanes into the water using its crane, which were taking off to bombard German forces and could be retrieved back from surface afterwards. The development of flat top vessels produced the first large fleet ships. In 1918, HMS Argus became the world's first carrier capable of launching and landing naval aircraft. Carrier evolution was well underway in the mid-1920s, resulting in ships such as HMS Hermes and Hōshō. Most early aircraft carriers ...
