| Multiple Computers and Switch, here is a "Old Modem" hook up to Windows 98SE/XP multiple computers on a switch (hooked up to one modem). Three computers, two Windows XP, one Windows 98SE, hooked up to the lan 2,3,4 of Switch of TP-Link TL402M Router/Switch ( only using Switch, Lan), output of Efficient Networks SpeedStream 5360 Modem goes to #1 of Lan, (not WAN = Router input). Internet service provider has install disc to set up computer to internet via Modem, this can be used to hook up multiple Win 98SE/XP computers to a switch. Why a switch not a router? Switches are smart and send information to where it is needed, a router sends all info everywhere and is slower. Notice all computers have 100 Mbps lan connections. Also every computer is independant, and doesn't need to be hooked up to another computer ( does not need to be hooked up as network). None of the computers show any connection to a network, complete indepedance. I don't like hubs or routers, so for Windows 98SE/XP the only options are direct connection to modem or using a switch. I would be great to be able to hook up a Windows 7 computer as well, but it does not work ( I tried), that is why our Windows 7 computer is hooked up to a newer modem and another internet connection. |
