| The Wild Life by the Sharpys: Alaska, Episode 6 features grizzly bears in Katmai National Park. When cubs leave their mothers at about 4-years old, bear guides call them "teens" because they are very curious, like to play, and tend to get into trouble. In this video, two newly independent "teen" grizzly siblings approach our group with curiosity. They are about 5 years old. In the most courageous act I've ever seen, Kevin "the Grizz" charges the young grizzlies with just an unlit road-flare in his hand. Since Katmai is a National Park, guns and pepper-spray are not allowed. When Kevin yells and kicks sand at the bears, the "teens" retreat. When Kevin turns back to our group, the young grizzlies follow. The retreat and return game goes back and forth for a while. The bear camp guides in this video have 40 years of combined experience observing bears at this location. Video by Brian and Krista Sharp. |
