| Information visualization (or 'infovis') refers to the process of transforming information (that is, collections of data, such as numbers, words or images) into a visual form enabling the user to observe, synthesize, understand the information in a variety of ways. Though the term can be used broadly, it is well defined in areas such as engineering, statistics, medicine, and journalism, but not in the liberal arts. As a consequence, it has not had a significant impact among our institutions despite its widespread adoption by media outlets, technical publications, and social networks. |
