UGLICH Russia

On the upper reaches of the Volga, around two hundred and eighty kilometres north of Moscow, is the Russian town of Uglich. The Dimitrijvskaija Church is crowned with blue, onion-shaped domes that are adorned with stars. It was built in 1692 out of stone and replaced a wooden church. Everywhere are illustrations of the mysterious death of the heir to the throne on the fifteenth of May, 1591. The red colour of the church is a symbol of bloodshed. Ivan the Terrible had two sons. The eldest, Fjodor Ivanovitch, was thought to be insane but was crowned anyway and was supported by Boris Godunov. As Godunov's sister, Irina, was married to Fjodor Ivanovitch, his dream of becoming Tsar was almost a reality. When news that the eight year old, Zarevitch, had fatally run into a knife while playing, it caused havoc. Three hundred years later the symbol of the Dimitrijevskaija Blood Church was returned to the place in which the savage deed had taken place. Subsequently, the Romanov Dynasty ruled for three centuries and Uglich became a place of sadness and remembrance of one of the most spectacular events in Russian history.

Thousands of Russians demand 'evolution not revolution'

Thousands, donning white ribbons, came to protest on the streets of Russia. For many, Saturday's protests against recent election results that kept Vlamidir Putin's United Russia party in power, were their first protest. Of the 20000 gathered in Moscow, most are from the nation's educated middle-class who are now openly calling for Putin to go. This weekend's protests mark the return of Russian street politics dormant since the collapse of the Soviet Union, but these protests are being carefully managed by the over 50000 police and Interior Ministry troops stationed on the ground. Al Jazeera's Neave Barker reports from Moscow.

Terror Management: 'US losing last credibility in Syria'

The EU continues to pursue its strategy of pressure on the Syrian regime to force it out of power. Foreign ministers have agreed to impose a travel ban and asset freeze on the British-born wife of the country's leader. Asma al-Assad is among 12 officials or family members to be added to a number of figures, including the president, who are already subject to sanctions. Washington has also threatened to tighten the screws on the Syrian government and isolate it even more if President Assad doesn't comply with the UN statement appealing for a ceasefire. With violence still raging in the country, the opposition has dismissed international calls on both sides to implement Kofi Annan's peace plan - as not meeting the needs of the people. Government consultant Christoph Hoerstel, who's recently returned from Syria, says he's deeply concerned that the sanctions may have been a response to recently leaked emails between the Assad family. Russian opposition unites behind Khodorkovsky

Opponents of Vlaidimir Putin, the Russian president, have rallied around a jailed businessman. Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once Russia's richest man, has been in jail since 2003, when he was charged with tax evasion and fraud. For Russia's opposition, the imprisonment of the oil magnate is another example of a judiciary controlled by the state, a fact which has made Khodorkovsky an icon for the movement. Al Jazeera's Sue Turton reports from Moscow on the growing influence of Putin's fierce rival in a Siberian prison.

Armageddon Ready: Russian solar probe to predict Earthly cataclysms

Some scientists believe bursts of solar activity cause natural disasters on our planet, but until now the star has been too difficult to reach or explore in any detail. Some Russian researchers think they have the solution. Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis -- apocalyptic pictures are becoming an ordinary part of news bulletins across the globe. And scientists are not giving out reassuring forecasts. "Unfortunately, we're expecting more severe cataclysms which may lead to large-scale human losses and destruction," says Baku-based Professor Elchin Kakhalilov of the Global Network for the Forecasting of Earthquakes. "I'm talking about even a possible shift of the centers of our entire civilization." The change in the Earth's seismic activity coincides with the rise of activity on the sun. Scientists have been witnessing gigantic bursts of plasma on its surface and say they are affecting our planet, even though it is over 90 million miles away.
