euronews business planet - Micro-credit brings organic growth in Ireland

www.euronews.com Business Planet has been to Dublin. The third country after Greece and Portugal to need an international financial bailout, it is forecast Ireland will come out of recession this year. A major problem for small and medium companies is still access to credit. But euronews met one entrepreneur who found a way around that. The adventure began for Darren Grant in 2008. He had decided to leave behind his senior management job in computing to open a supermarket dealing in 100 per cent organic goods on the main street of Blackrock in Dublin. Even though the recession was taking hold, he believed in his project. He invested all of his savings, but was still short of funds to fit-out his shop, buy his first stock and pay his staff. So Darren looked at European micro-credit - up to 25000 euros for new business employing up to 10 people. It is money allocated through intermediaries for the European Investment Fund. "I went to Google and I typed in EU Funding for small businesses and what came up was a website, where I simply clicked into and found out there was funding available for EU businesses, which is great," Darren told us. "This led me to the Irish microfinance website first step, and I applied to get 25000 euros, to start the business." Darren now employs eight people - four of them full-time - to run the shop and his internet site which has become a runaway success. Last year it turned over 800000 euros and won various accolades, including the best internet ...

euronews business planet - EU grants for eco-innovation

www.euronews.com Eco-innovation provides 3.5 million jobs across Europe, most of them in SMEs (small and medium sized businesses) which can apply for EU financing. This can help with the essential task of transforming an eco-innovative project into a real offer on the marketplace. Bamboo as a water treatment system was a creative idea for treating polluted water which was dreamed up by a small French company specialising in ecological water treatment plants. Bamboo filters water without creating bad smells or mud. The problem was, it wasn't adapted for industrial use - until Veronique Arfi, the company's deputy CEO realised that there were European grants for eco-innovation. Veronique Arfi explained: "We used this as an opportunity to gain access to the market, and to industrialise our process, and to get a shop window for future clients." With three other SMEs, Veronique submitted her idea for "Briter Water" to the EU's Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP), which agreed to co-finance half of the 700000 euros needed to set up a pilot bamboo project. This was installed on the site of a large company which was also very involved in the projet. Romain Sadak, the Safety and Environmental Coordinator for Refresco France, said: "We put around 300000 euros into the project, so that it wouldn't only be a pilot project but a project which later on, could be a real industrial business, which is exactly what interests us." Since the launch in 2009, Veronique has ...

The Real Breaking Bad: How the Drug War Creates Collateral Damage

88-year-old Bob Wallace, and his 85-year-old girlfriend, Marjorie Ottenberg fell in love 35 years ago backpacking to the tops of the highest peaks in the world. Wallace is a Stanford educated engineer and Ottenberg is a former chemist and decades ago they came up with a water purification product for backpackers like themselves called Polar Pure out of their garage in Saratoga, Calif. "For an old guy with nothing else to do, this is something that keeps us occupied," says Wallace. Today, Wallace and Ottenberg are fighting the Drug Enforcement Administration and state officials to continue to operate their business. Why? The DEA says that drug dealers are using their product to make methamphetamine. The DEA says meth heads are interested in Polar Pure's key ingredient, iodine crystals. In 2007 the DEA reclassified iodine as a controlled substance and named Polar Pure in particular as a product that was of concern to the DEA. The DEA told Wallace and Ottenberg, they could continue to operate their business but they would have to pay a $1200 regulatory fee, register with the state and feds, report any suspicious activity and keep track of each and ever person who bought a bottle of their product. Bob says that the overhead alone would be too much to pass onto customers. "So that's why I didn't bother with their rules, because I would be out of business if I followed their regulations," says Wallace. The same went for camping stores and online outlets that stocked Polar Pure ...
