Computing Beyond Turing - Jeff Hawkins

Coaxing computers to perform basic acts of perception and robotics, let alone high-level thought, has been difficult. No existing computer can recognize pictures, understand language, or navigate through a cluttered room with anywhere near the facility of a child. Hawkins and his colleagues have developed a model of how the neocortex performs these and other tasks. The theory, call Hierarchical Temporal Memory, explains how the hierarchical structure of the neocortex builds a model of its world and uses this model for inference and prediction. To turn this theory into a useful technology, Hawkins has created a company called Numenta. In this talk, Hawkins will describe the theory, its biological basis, and a software platform created by Numenta that allows anyone to apply this theory to a variety of problems. Part of this theory was described in Hawkins' 2004 book, "On Intelligence". This talk is by the Chairman of the Redwood Neuroscience Institute and co-founder of Palm Computing and Handspring, and is co-sponsored by Calit2 at UCSD, the Jacobs School's Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)department, and the Institute for Neural Computation (INC).

Lessons & Reminders from Surah Baqarah - Br. Nouman Ali Khan

Indepth Study on Surah Baqarah - Ayah 37-44. This tafseer was held on Islamic Center of Irving, TX on the 12th Night of Taraweeh - Aug 21st 2010 . Nouman Khan began his formal Arabic training during his childhood schooling in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He continued his Arabic grammar study in Pakistan, where he received a scholarship for ranking among the top 10 scores in the national Arabic studies board examination. Under the guidance of Dr. Abdus-Samie, founder and formal principal of Quran College in Faisalabad, Pakistan, he developed a keen methodical understanding of Arabic grammar. He further benefited from Dr. Abdus-Samie by internalizing his unique teaching methods and later translating his work into English for the benefit of his own students. Nouman currently serves as professor of Arabic at Nassau Community College and has taught Modern Standard and Classical Arabic at various venues for nearly 6 years with over 700 students. His handbook published by the Bayyinah Arabic Studies Institute for ARA-201 is also being used as a class aide at the Jaamiah-Al-Uloom Al-Islamiyyah, Institute of Islamic Education in Ajax, Canada. Cured: A Cannabis Story (A Film By David Triplett)

Cannabis cured my skin cancer. This is my story. It has been proven that concentrated cannabis extract oil cures cancer. Why hasn't The US National Cancer Institute or The American Cancer Society tested Cannabis Oil?. Is it lack of personnel (2100 USNCI staff members) or limited financial support (USNCI 2010 budget of $5.1 Billion dollars!) Cannabis Concentrate or extract is the same as Rick Simpson's "Hemp Oil". Hemp seed oil is NOT what Rick Simpson is making and using. Google "cannabinoids" and "cancer". Google "endocannabinoids" and "cancer" Google "THC" and "Cancer". Google pubmed, go there and look up "endocannabinoids" and "cancer", as well as "cannabinoids" and "cancer". Google Dr. Robert Dr Robert Melamede and cancer".

Is the Universe Full of Life? (313)

In this University of Southern California program, Robert Kuhn hosts a group of distinguished panelists in a discussion of what may lie beyond our world. Humans have long wondered whether life exists beyond our home planet. In recent years, a host of new technologies are turning speculation into science. We now have the ability to discern the atmosphere of an extra-solar planet so distant we can't even see it, to detect the presence of dozens of new planets circling stars similar to our own sun. To top things off, recent discoveries of life in environments on Earth so extreme leads to the belief that it's not unreasonable to imagine that microbes -- or more -- may flourish elsewhere in the Universe. Panelists include: Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, Bruce Murray, professor of planetary science and geology at the California Institute of Technology and Shri Kulkarni, planetary astronomer at CalTech.

Human Evolution and Why It Matters: A Conversation with Leakey and Johanson

Celebrating decades of groundbreaking exploration in East Africa, renowned paleoanthropologists Donald Johanson and Richard Leakey shared the stage at the American Museum of Natural History on May 5 to discuss the overwhelming evidence for evolution in the hominid fossil record and why understanding our evolutionary history is so important. The discussion, before a sold-out crowd in the Museum's LeFrak Theater, was moderated by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, chief medical correspondent for CNN. The event was also live-streamed on amnh.org to a digital audience of several hundred viewers around the country. Known for such landmark discoveries as "Lucy" (Johanson) and "Turkana Boy" (Leakey), the work of these two scientists has produced much of the fossil evidence that forms our understanding of human evolution. Looking back over careers spanning 40-plus years, Dr. Johanson and Dr. Leakey shared the stories behind their monumental finds and offered a look at what's ahead in human evolutionary research. This historic event was made possible through a joint partnership of the American Museum of Natural History, the Arizona State University Institute of Human Origins, and the Turkana Basin Institute, headquartered in the US at Stony Brook University. This video is a recording of the live stream, which ran at www.amnh.org Produced and directed by James Sims. Shot by Jill Bauerle and Manuel Benitez for AMNH.org.

Douglas Engelbart : The Mother of All Demos (1/9)

On December 9, 1968, Douglas C. Engelbart and the group of 17 researchers working with him in the Augmentation Research Center at Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, CA, presented a 90-minute live public demonstration of the online system, NLS, they had been working on since 1962. The public presentation was a session in the of the Fall Joint Computer Conference held at the Convention Center in San Francisco, and it was attended by about 1000 computer professionals. This was the public debut of the computer mouse. But the mouse was only one of many innovations demonstrated that day, including hypertext, object addressing and dynamic file linking, as well as shared-screen collaboration involving two persons at different sites communicating over a network with audio and video interface. Pipeline Through the Fens (1968) - extract

This striking documentary focuses on the construction of the hidden conduit for North Sea gas lurking under the picturesque Norfolk fenland. 'Pipeline Through the Fens' was filmed during the 12 weeks in 1968 it took to lay 43 miles of pipeline under the county. The film (made on behalf of The Gas Council) focuses on the considerable engineering achievement involved in linking sections of pipe (each one 40 feet long, 36 inches wide and weighing 4.5 tons) and burying them 9ft below the surface. The workers scrupulous care is understandable - you really wouldn't want to be trying to find a leak later on! TEDxCaltech - Leonard Susskind - Richard Feynman

Leonard Susskind is the Felix Bloch Professor of Physics at Stanford University. His research interests include string theory, quantum field theory, quantum statistical mechanics, and quantum cosmology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and, since 2009, has been serving as Director of the Stanford Institute for Theoretical Physics. About TEDx, x = independently organized event: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.) On January 14, 2011, Caltech hosted TEDxCaltech, an exciting one-day event to honor Richard Feynman, Nobel Laureate, Caltech physics professor, iconoclast, visionary, and all-around "curious character."
