The Elemental Project 2011-12

(Raw footage for review and eventual editing) THE ELEMENTAL PROJECT... ...catching a glimpse of Atlanta's recent trend in site-specific dance performance On March 2, 3, and 4, Beacon Dance became the first organization to present a performance in the Decatur Cemetery, with The Elemental Project, 2011-12: Section 16, part 1 (Fire), . The performances are part of an on-going series of site-specific works by Beacon Dance based on the four primal elements: water, earth, fire and air. Water Study took place in October at the stream in the Baker Woodlands on Emory campus; Earth was performed in November on the Beltline not far from Piedmont Park; Fire took place this weekend at the Decatur Cemetery; and the final installment, Air, will be performed at the arts facility B-Complex in southwest Atlanta in early May. The cemetery location was selected in response to the way that Beacon's artistic director D. Patton White has developed the project, with the elements serving metaphorically for the various stages of life, with WATER as the origin of life, EARTH as the process of living, FIRE as death and AIR as what happens after death. Although such site-specific performances have become a strong trend recently in Atlanta dance, the current Elemental series actually represents a revisiting of performances White's group first created starting in 1998. Beacon performed the original Water Study in 1998 in the basement of City Hall East, which was built over the site of fresh water ...

Pedro & Ines

Excerpts from "Pedro & Ines", in concert Jan 2011 at 7Stages Theatre, Atlanta. Full Radius Dance is an integrated modern dance company that presents mature, choreographically complex works celebrating technique and physicality. The mission of Full Radius Dance is to promote, advance, and enhance the modern dance form for persons with disabilities, for dance artists, and the general community. Our focus is on skill and artistry; that some of the dancers use wheelchairs is secondary. The wheelchair may lend additional movement possibilities to the choreography, but is not the focal point of the work. Leslie Wayne: Recent Work at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond

Leslie Wayne: Recent Work at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond Richmond, Virginia April 1 - June 4, 2011 Visual Arts Center of Richmond welcomes Caroline Cobb Wright, new director of exhibition programming Exhibition organized by Mark Sloan, Director and Senior Curator, Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art College of Charleston School of the Arts Support for the exhibition provided in part by Altria Group, Inc. Leslie Wayne is represented by Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, and Solomon Projects, Atlanta. Her work currently is being exhibited at Page Bond Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. ARTIST STATEMENT: My concerns with abstract painting are twofold. First is with abstraction as a visual language in a world that is represented primarily through the force multipliers of photography, video and digital media. Second is with my own work, my aim being to inspire a sensation that's analogous to experiencing nature. My process results not so much in pictures as direct imprints of duration, exposing the history of their own making in the exposed and manipulated layers of color. Echoing a kind of morphogenesis, they formulate themselves in an arena of inevitability, resulting in visual manifestations of the physical forces I impose on them. At the same time, my process is about the individuation of discovery. In that process, I see the manipulation of the material as having a dual purpose: 1) to be a vehicle for a process of expression, and ultimately 2) to be the map of that ...

Carrie Mae Weems: Thirteen Questions for Wynton Marsalis & Cornel West | Art21 "Exclusive"

Episode #078: As part of a panel discussion moderated by Baraka Sele at the 20th National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, artist Carrie Mae Weems poses thirteen questions to musician Wynton Marsalis and professor Cornel West, followed by an impromptu song and dance by the participants and audience. Weems's vibrant explorations of photography, video, and verse breathe new life into traditional narrative forms—social documentary, tableaux, self-portrait, and oral history. Eliciting epic contexts from individually framed moments, Weems debunks racist and sexist labels, examines the relationship between power and aesthetics, and uses personal biography to articulate broader truths. Whether adapting or appropriating archival images, restaging famous news photographs, or creating altogether new scenes, she traces an indirect history of the depiction of African Americans for more than a century. Learn more about Carrie Mae Weems: www.art21.org VIDEO | Producer: Wesley Miller & Nick Ravich. Camera: Joel Shapiro. Sound: Evan McIntosh. Editor: Paulo Padilha & Mark Sutton. Traces of a Presence: The Metronome

The video installation is the video and a metronome ticking out time in the floor of the gallery. It is a meditation about time and its effects on the body. It is also an effort to remind audience members of the toll of time. It has a run time of around 10 minutes.
