digilander.libero.it An attempt by opponents of Vladimir Putin to protest his victory in the presidential elections, occupying a square in Moscow, ended on Monday when riot police quickly dispersed the protesters and arrested hundreds. The day became a reminder of the challenges facing the Russian opposition. The harsh crackdown could fuel the anger of opponents and lead to larger protests against 12 years in power Putin and his election to another six, but also underlined the willingness of authorities to use force to crush such demonstrations . The government's response was swift and decisive. Rows of officers in riot gear entered the landmark Pushkin Square in central Moscow and took the protesters into police buses were waiting. About 250 people were arrested in the city, police said. The police action came after a meeting which gathered around 20000 people angered by a campaign tilted in favor of Putin and fraudulent reports in Sunday's election. The rally was held peacefully, but hundreds of police violently dispersed hundreds of demonstrators who had vowed to stay in Pushkin Square until Putin resign. The charismatic opposition leader Alexei Navalny was among those arrested, along with Sergei Udaltsov, another opposition figure. Dozens of people were taken to police cars parked around the square.
