Integrating Family Planning With Conservation in Madagascar: Vik Mohan, Blue Ventures

Madagascar is an environmental treasure in the Indian Ocean, home to 5 percent of global biodiversity and 80 percent of its flora and fauna are found nowhere else in the world. Yet it also ranks as a "least developed country" and its population of 21 million is one of the fastest-growing in the world, projected to reach 29 million by 2025. Maternal mortality is extremely high and only 29 percent of married women are using modern contraception. In this interview, Vik Mohan of the UK-based marine conservation organization Blue Ventures describes the population and environment challenges of rural coastal Madagascar and how their organization has successfully integrated family planning with their ongoing conservation work to benefit communities health and livelihoods.

Dr Ian Yeoman - SME panel discussion - The Future with High Speed Broadband conference

Ian participated in the SME panel discussion at the conference. Dr. Ian Yeoman is the world's only professional futurologist dedicated to specializing in travel and tourism. Ian learned his trade as the scenario planner for VisitScotland, where he established the process of futures thinking within the organisation using a variety of techniques including economic modelling, trends analysis and scenario construction. Koliba) to discuss this far-reaching topic as part of the Complex Systems Spire Speaker Series. His research emphasizes the use of quantitative approaches to investigate the mechanisms structuring ecological systems, including statistical models, analytical models, and computer simulation models. The are areas of research in which he is most interested include complexity and NKS ("new kind of science").

It gives him the opportunity to choose where to live and work, to stay healthy, to feel secure and to help others. People strive for justice so that they can defend their freedom and remain independent from unforeseen circumstances and arbitrary decisions of those who are stronger. Conversely, poverty, underdevelopment, corruption and low life expectancy are the main enemies of our freedom. Therefore, I consider it a great achievement that we have protected the Russian people from the first wave of the crisis and prevented widespread poverty.
